There's about 1000 darknet marketplaces, it's finding the right one that's the issue. Once a big one like Silkroad, Dream Market etc. get's closed it's just a matter of time before another big one pops up.

I think Silkroad is still up anyway, version 3.1 or some ****, just run by different people.

Yes, even after the feds took over for Hansa for a month. They only prosecuted 12 vendors and one buyer who bought wholesale quantities like keys.

That is a valid point about Tor, but you can do things to make transactions very hard to trace.

Use an IP vanish before you open Tor, use a bitcoin shaker before you transfer coins for extra encryption, and use a separate PGP encryptor rather than the one used by Silk Road (in case it gets busted) to transfer information.

Then it is pretty hard to trace you.

When Silk Road users and Hansa users data was compromised, some users/vendors revealed details by using the market's encryption tool.

The ones who used a separate PGP tool were not compromised.

Also when the operation against Hansa collated information on 27000 users, they arrested under 20, as most users were protected by layers of security, be it Bitcoin shakers, IP vanishers, PGP encryption, etc....
