I remember Wolfie! He loved it when we howled at him! Used to stand on one of the concrete pillars of the scoreboard.... we also had someone called Mutley around us too, who would get mentioned in a song!!
remember going to Anfield we were 3 down in twenty mins then Wilf scored and there was an"elton johns taylor made army " that lasted past the end of the game!! Being at the back of the rookery terrace ,seeing a watford goal and then finding yourself at the front of the rookery, loads more fun and atmosphere, H&S would have had a heart attack then
There is also a PC (Special I believe) who in his younger days was the spitting image of Prince Charles but without the huge sticky-out ears. I believe he's still around. We used to bow when passing him on the way into the ground. Sad, I know.
I started by going to see games in the Family Enclosure and once I was in my teens couldn't wait to be too old for it so I could stand on the Vic Rd terrace, which I did for the 2 years until I went to Uni. I think the atmosphere would be so much better if terraces came back as a lot of singing was generated there then was carried on by the stands, especially on the "special nights".
Back in the mid 90's when we were averaging just 8,000 we still got behind the team and made more of an atmosphere than we do these days. Back then though football was a sport, a sport for the working class, whereas these days football is a business, a buisness for the middle classes.
Back in the 90's I was living locally, well Uxbridge and I was able to have a season ticket as my job was Mon-Fri 8-5! and I have to agree with Mitch the atmosphere for all the home games was electric. There was a buzz going round the ground far more singing and chanting, a sense of anticipation. If memory serves the season when we got relegated we drew 2 games against Sunderland and if we had only beaten them once we would have stayed up! Mitch, would this young ginger fan tend to go round in a a vulgar tracksuit?? If so, I also have noticed him at away games, I've seen him goad away fans endless times but i didn't know he was capable of getting himself chucked out??
I cant remember what clothes he wore, but I can tell you that he loves to jump around and throw his arms about. When we scored our 2nd goal at Leeds last season, after I had finished celebrating our goal, I look to my right and ginge is literately hanging over the metal segregation thing goading the Leeds fans. At Pompey, again last season he was at the very front, first row, slightly to the right of the goal.
i sat next to him at Leeds..he was quite amusing actually...can't say he doesn't have passion! He wasn't near away fans though, which might explain why he was fine
