Bought all the big punk albums when they came out

Saw them all (Pistols excepted) at the time

Read the major books (best one England's Dreaming by Jon Savage) and always listen to opinions of other people who were there

Always thought there was an air of phoniness about the Clash. Their links with Jasper Conran, Caroline Coon etc did not sit well with their projected 'tower block no marks' image.

'Career Opportunities?' You're the son of a diplomat and went to boarding school for Heaven's sake, 'Joe' !

True, he did go to boarding school, he and his brother saw their parents once a year from the ages of ten to seventeen, which was the age at which his brother committed suicide.

    Spoilt bastards.

Saw what you like about The Clash but they gave the world the greatest album sleeve of all time.

So why did he seek to portray himself an inner-city prole with no prospects then?

Unless of course it was the 'in' thing at the time?
