He was from Salford and (Presumably) of Irish heritage. I don't see the problem, most people I know have Irish family including me, we just don't bang on about it like the bloody Yanks.

Really? Most people of Irish descent I know cheer on England and couldn't give a toss about ROI. I can't speak for them as I only have an Irish Grandma. But, at the end of the day, the song was written about Salford, Lancashire, and that's why it should be our wonderful County's anthem.
