The short term weather forecast for the whole of the South of England is an unsettled one with rain predicted for Saturday, Sunday and Monday (tomorrow’s offering in particular is supposed to be heavy and prolonged). There does therefore seem to be some initial promise for the connections of Nathaniel although we all know that the Met Office can be wrong! I really hope he goes to Ascot as certainly feel he is more than capable of shaking up some of the more fancied horses.

I do wonder though if the possible change of race targets is owner driven as old boy Gosden was most adamant after the ‘King Edward VII’ that Nathaniel would go Newbury Group 3 then the Leger. Well done, Lady Rothschild, if it is, say I, as this is a quality animal who deserves to be competing at the old ‘top table’. In fact if I were her Ladyship I’d also be asking Mr Gosden why my horse wasn’t put in the Derby as well. As his Chester form with Treasure Beach, allied to the huge improvement shown between then and Royal Ascot, must have meant he would have gone very close at Epsom Downs. Newbury Group 3, how dappy!!! Get him in the ‘King George’.

Re Fiorente and the Leger I seem to recall old Sir Michael voicing a few doubts after his ‘King Edward VII’ 2nd place. However, the thing this one does have going for him is that 3 out of the last 4 runners-up in that Ascot race have gone onto win the Leger. Amazing stat but will he get the chance to uphold it???
