The FA is certainly a big part of the problem, always thinking WYA, and never trying to do the best they can for the game. Barton's point about them not being football people is valid. Non-Americans would also have a hard time understanding what seems so shocking to us about British coverage of football in general and the national team in particular. Our media is mostly ****, the coverage is bland, but it's almost always ****ty, bland positive coverage of the national team.
Yeah, it's funny because I have absolutely no gripes about the US team. They're hardworking and have got some great results over the past few years. I've even been criticized for not supporting them enough but I simply can't be bothered to care. The only plus side I'm seeing is the growing rivalry with Mexico which can hopefully add some drama and drum up interest in the team. And I completely agree about the US media concerning the team. It's almost non existent with little to no tactical analysis.
The US team has consistently been mild over-achievers. It's been a little disappointing that the US hasn't developed any players as good as Donovan and Dempsey since they came along, though. It was looking as if the team was heading straight up, and instead it's flatlined.
