Horrible that these situations are becoming more common, especially when the debate is whether it might be terrorism. Always makes you doubt next time you fly.
From what the authorities have released and the 'plane's behaviour there has been a loss of control (tiny bomb in right place) or an incident in the cockpit. The biggest mystery is the lack of emergency call of any kind. Certainly not a routine checkable occurrence and possibly shades of the the German airline incident.
As a matter of fact they are stopping 50 miles up the track coming from Melbourne and then you have to get a bus because the newfangled trains are not activating the crossing gates so they were remaining open whilst the train came roaring through. Fortunately nobody got hurt but they decided to play safe and try to rectify the problem before continuing. Hasn't been fixed yet. When I first came here 50 years ago Victoria were still using the old rejects from Britain affectionately known as "The Red Rattlers" and when I first ventured on to one to go to Melbourne I fully expected a horde of red Indians galloping alongside shooting arrows at me. The Country was pretty sparse then and coming back there was a sign on the station before mine with an arrow pointing up the track which said "Box Hill and beyond"!!??
If there's anything France/EU can do to cover up a security blunder, they'll do it. I'm not sure what else could cause a plane to spin 360 degrees then 90 degrees back the other way.
