As suggested by others, I think it's man who has subverted the 'word of God' for their own ends. The religious texts I've read (Christian and non-Christian) have had, by and large, a beautiful message.
I say this as a person who hasn't been christened, nor has been inducted into any religion.

I've read enough thanks, it's naive to assume that what they say and what they do are the same thing. By their very nature they are unpredictable and show no remorse for their actions, so to assume they'll only target the things they say they will is both dangerous and showing a sincere lack of knowledge as to how those kinds of operations work.
You only need to look at where they have struck and what type of event to get a feel for what their mindset is.
