But whose place could he take in the current Spurs team? They're playing some of the best football in the land right now (apart from their stupid tendency to pass it around in their own penalty area). They look capable of reaching the dizzy heights of the Spurs team of about 50 years ago: 'Arry Kane would press Greavesie as a goal wizard, and Dele Alli looks one helluva prospect; he reminds me a lot of another of my all-time favourite players -- "Lightning" John White. (Oldies, please forgive the joke.)
I guess it's more that he doesn't even make the bench. But of Spurs' regular starters, I'd pick out Lamela as the weak link (and not just because my tablet autocorrects him to Lamely). He's talented but absolutely infuriating, making loads of daft decisions.
Hmmm. I like him a lot and think he'll be even better in a year or two. Anyone who does the things he does, at the speed he does them, is bound to make some mistakes. Aluko, anyone? (Ducks down, out of sight.)
On his day he can be devastating. But that comes a couple of times a season, while Dele Alli is doing it every single week and Eriksson's class is undeniable.
Spurs obviously have top four aspirations and there's no way Townsend is a top four player. It's crazy that we're talking about £14m for a mid table player who isn't a striker and can't even make the bench at his current club.
He's only made three sub appearances in the league this season, the last in the middle of October, it's no wonder his fitness levels are dropping.
