Transfer Rumours Andre Ayew

Is that because you think it might not fit with Mike and Lee’s long term business strategy or because it would be breaking Premier League rules?

Would it? I always thought we could take four over the course of a season but no more than two at one time. I thought foreign loans were different again and pretty much didn't have restrictions?

Otherwise how did we manage to loan Kenedy, Slimani and Dubravka?

I stand corrected ...... and even worse its by you.

You are right the two at any time only applies to loans from English clubs. You can then have up to 5 overseas players in your matchday squad. However the FA are trying to reduce the latter to zero once Brexit goes through and not only that but make it so you can only loan English players from PL clubs In other words none of Kenedy, Slimani and Dubravka loans would be allowed in future. Will be interesting to see if this stops clubs buying up loads of overseas talent and then hoarding them for loans.

Have to say I like those proposed changes massively! Should be a massive benefit to English players being used more.

I would think that it will result in English players being used less. the only way that it would lead to English players playing more is if:
a. big clubs stopped buying them all up; or
b. they let them play in the first team.

neither seems likely. at least young players who are sent out on loan are playing for somebody

I think rather that it being a limit on players you can loan in, it should be a limit on the amount of players you can loan out!

That would instantly stop clubs hoovering up talent!

Clubs would then have to buy players that they fully intend to actually play. If you have too many players then they will soon up and offski!

If you can only loan English players, teams are going to still need loans. Its never changed in the history of football It just means the PL teams will have to take the very best English youngsters and use them.

The hoovering problem needs dealt with separately.

The more opportunities English players are given over their foreign counterparts the better for me.

So English players would be loaned out but foreign players would not ? Sounds like an incentive to play your foreign players to me

Not really from my point of view. Loan players always get games anyway, foreign players or not. I can see what you mean but in practice with the talent England are producing at the moment at younger levels I think these players will play. I think many of them would regardless. However I’m all for a rule which may aid that process perhaps even leading to a larger pool.

There is much work still be done to get as many English players as possible playing in our top division. Its an absolute must for me. Added to that we need to get as many as possible playing in the top leagues abroad too. The combination will help England no end.

Do this and the rest will look after itself. The FA should establish an office dedicated to linking up young players with clubs abroad.

I couldn't agree on the that being enough as a sole measure but as always each to their own, I want a greater percentage of English players playing in our league, and I'm keen to see it imposed rather than just encouraged. I suppose it comes down to a lack of trust in the clubs, their owners and the PL in general. They have failed over the last 10 years and I don't want the next generations wasted through lack of opportunity.

On the subject of foreign experience though I did wonder about whether we could set up a mutual exchange situation with fellow country FA's. The FA could handpick the best to go and get that experience. You'd need clubs to be open to it of course which is always the sticking point with the PL as they are there players. I can see why other sports have central contracts. Perhaps if a percentage of all this money coming in went to the FA to centrally contract part of the top youngsters (say 10), then this could be a solution. Clubs still have the rights to those players once they come out of the contract, but for a short period their development is part guided by the national development centre. In return the FA pick up the wage tab. The players, the national team and eventually the club all receive mutual benefits.

Surely once Brexit goes through there will be less European players available anyway, particularly those which are not regular internationals, as they won't be able to get work permits.
