Some games remain in the memory and I remember this one because as a family we had gone to the common for the fair and it caused a bit of a fuss when I said I was going to go to the game which may have kicked off early. I do remember we were three goals down at half time and I couldn't see how we would get back into it. It was a sunnier day than that recording suggests. Maybe CBK remembers the game. A few years later I saw Paine and Channon work together to score one of the best goals I can remember at the Dell and I saw quite a few. It was in a game against Dave Sexton's QPR and they were one hell of a team with the likes of Rodney Marsh, Stan Bowles, Leighton James, Phil Parkes, Gerry Francis etc. Paine was in midfield and was wide on the left when he hooked a ball over Channon's shoulder as he was in full stride which dropped just in front of Channon who caught it full on the volley and scored a magnificent goal. The game ended 1-1 and it was the best game of football I can ever remember watching. It is just such a shame that the goal was not recorded for me to re-enjoy today.
[Cough] ...that would be Clyde Best of course. His goal was typical West Ham. Assist by none other than Harry Redknapp..!
Great clip. With my fading memory, I would have thought that Gabriel had packed up by then. And Jenkins...... "Tom and Gerry on the wings".
