Charlie Thomas. In the Five Crowns with Ben E King and then joined the Drifters with him in 1959. Charlie then stayed with the Drifters for the next 6 decades. Was lead singer on songs which had inferior cover versions in this country, like these two the versions by the Searchers, Jimmy Justice and Craig Douglas did not compare.
I had a Purple Chopper... Thank goodness for antibiotics... Earls 1970's? Beast of a bike, handled like riding a fridge, not designed for hills or distance of any kind - but other kids always wanted a go. If you pulled the brakes too hard (if they worked) and you slid down that saddle onto that gear shifter........... Joys of being young
"Bomb Bikes" any frame you could scrounge / acquire, and any other parts, original front wheel, old 'moby' (moped) or Chopper back wheel, cowhorn handlebar, brakes optional - not always the best decision if we took them up to the old Eppleworth quarry, going up was 'difficult' - down in retrospect *******, but fun... Made our own stupidity in those days...
No, no! A 5-speed racer had to have drop handlebars and one of those black canvas saddlebags that sat on a right-angled chrome frame that you could hook onto your shoulder to look cool!
Raleigh choppers were just a bit after my time, pal at school used to have one of those Moulton small-wheeled bikes, with front suspension! He would cycle from Longhill to school in Pickering Road every day, 20 mile round trip?
Cow horns, no brakes, no lights; false name to the copper who pulled me over, resulted in a fifteen quid fine at Brough Magistrates Court for me, circa 1978. We took trials bikes and stripped down Honda C50s, 70s and 90s to Eppleworth quarry. I don't know how we are all still alive. As you say, we made our own stupidity...
To be fair to the stereotyped female shaped person on the left photo, riding a large motorcycle backwards whilst balancing on some poncy poser is no easy feat... And the two on the right - yep needs to be some complaints...
Interesting….new series of fawlty towers….loved it in the 80s Could it work now? https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/02/07/fawlty-towers-remake-john-cleese-daughter-camilla/
Built most of my bikes from bits taken out of Ken Ellerkers waste bins on the corner of Chants Ave and Murrayfield Road. Used to straighten front forks with my dad's lump hammer. Massive cow horn bars with the bracing bar across them. Never bought a tyre for years, just wrapped more black tape around the bald patches where we skidded. Good times, no internet, life was simple. Wish I was 13 again, the things I'd have done different.
To be fair these days those on the motorbike, and in the other pic, could be any or all genders, modern times. The views expressed in my posts are not necessarily mine.
