When we drank downtown Leeds, which wasn't often, we always went to Whitelock's - charming old place. Still pop in there for one when I'm back over there. Hardly recognize the city centre any more.
Mostly drank in The Original Oak or The Skyrack in Headingley at night, or The Eldon or The Packhorse on Woodhouse Lane during lunch break. Sat nights were mainly in the Student Union bar to attend the great bands that played there. Great times.

Used to go in Skyrack and Original Oak myself when I had a flat in Headingley. Often took advantage of the scheme, with a mate of mine, where you left a deposit and they filled up a small barrel for you to take home. Handy in those days of restricted opening hours.

I used to drink in them. Indian (Tariqs??) next door to the Skyrack served a decent curry

Meccano man myself...
Not sure if they let the little darlings play about with all those nuts and bolts these days Plum, I always had a magnet near by if I lost one of those things, talking of which, I don't know what happened to my set.

Will have been a bit later than me. Indian restaurants were a rarity in those days. They increased after the arrival of a lot of Bangladeshis and Pakistanis following the trouble in the late 1960s.
I used to work next to the office of Pakistani International Airways. The manager was the first female in such a position. Even more surprising given the attitude of that country towards women. She used to get fed up with hordes arriving unable to speak English and thinking for some reason she would be able to help them.
Nearly all Indian restaurants are actually Pakistani or Bangladeshi.
My favourite food was a really good fish and chip shop. I think it was on Headingley Lane.

If it's the one round the corner on St Michael's Lane, my mate Denis owned it in the 60's... He & his good wife kept us alive in those days. I still stay with him on my visits to Leeds.

That could be the one. There was another, Brian's I think it was that was very good as well.

Did you ever find a great chip shop in Hull, Castro?

The best two I found in Hull when I lived there were one off Albert Ave, only small fìsh but so cheap you could buy two.And one on Cottingham Road opposite Waddington's.
It was a Jewish bloke who had a shop around Sutton Park/Bransholme way.He had retired but got bored and open up on Cott Rd. The only place I have liked where the fishbeas fried in oil not beef dripping.Only did fish, chips and peas. Always a big queue there. Dundee Street weren't bad but he was hardly ever open.
Have never understood the fuss about Cave Street in recent times. Not even average in my opinion.

There were some good fish and chip shops in Leeds, Wessies are pretty good at fish and chips. But the worst fish and chips I have ever had
we're from this place on Harehills Lane. Me and a mate used to go in just for a laugh. The woman always handed over the fish and chips saying "A lovely bit of fish there". If you tilted it slightly as she handed it over the grease used to pour out over the counter. The bin outside was full of partially eaten fish.

Can you remember what that chippy on Cott rd was called? We used to go there from Orchard Park, passing maybe seven other chippies on the way. Me Mam insisted on it <laugh> Was it Greenwoods or something like that?

Could have been. Rings a bell. A lot of people used to come from Bransholme and Sutton Park when they found out he had opened up another shop and get big orders for themselves and their neighbours. My wife also thought they were some of the best fish and chips she had.
