There's a common denominator in most of these industries you mention. They have for years exploited the national minimum wage and recruit the youngest people available.
I was going to add but forgot that they may all be young peoples jobs, but for them it's a start and the first step on the ladder. B+Q are quite famous for employing older people, those with trades or DIY experience probably to help the kids who have no idea. Have a pensioner friend who does two nights a week in one of the big supermarket chains, some times driving the floor cleaner machine or warehouse jobs. There must be others.
AI will initially replace all the entry level jobs. These are usually the first stepping stone on the management career path- but that will be removed,so how does someone start? Coders are expected to be replaced in a couple of years,. Software engineering, once seen as a sure thing will cease to exist as an option-AI will start writing it's own code. It won't be a case of 'i don't mind working only 2/3 days a week ', there will be no need for you at all. Admittedly, I have no clue about AI, but I've seen plenty online from people who have, and none of the scenarios seem positive. Maybe I'm just watching the wrong stuff.
Yes and I'm glad they are getting a chance to get there feet on the job's ladder I hadn't thought of B & Q but yes,I've seen that on occasion.I'll maybe pop them a letter tomorrow outlining my situation, cheers.
I was always hoping to work from home or that AI would do my job for me but as I was the guy who had to go out into the real world when the wheels fell off, literally, it hasn't yet happened and I don't see it coming any time soon.
On my old mates recommendation try the supermarket chains especially if you could do odd hours days or shifts that the kids don't want to do. Good luck.
Can you drive? Where I live supermarkets are always looking for drivers for online order deliveries. Is it the same up there?
No,I don't drive mate...Never have, more fool me really,It's hindered me most of my working life but I've never fancied it,silly I know!!! Thing was though when I started working, industry was huge in my Local area, transport was easy to get or I could walk to most. Then when the industry's folded, warehousing was the in thing....Now it's not here and a lot goes on at Eurocentral Motherwell but it's got appalling access by public transport.
Sort of related, BBC2 Simon Reeve in Scandinavia. They invested their oil money in a sovereign wealth fund which is now worth over a trillion. They own 1.5% of all the stocks and shares in the world, they generate more money than they spend on schools, roads, and such stuff every year. Britain had more oil revenue at the same time but we spent all ours. Oh and of their fund only 0.2% is invested in Green though their conditions permit them to invest up to 2% in such things.
Yeah, but - we created billionaires whose wealth trickled down to the masses; haven't had mine yet, but I live in hope
Same. The problem with the sovereign wealth fund is that if too much of it is used for public works, it causes inflation due to too much money being released into the economy, which ****s all of us over as prices go up across the board. So the country gets a new motorway or tunnel, usually near or in the capital, which costs hundreds of billions of kronor, but then food prices go up 5% for the whole country that year. Norway owns and earns this money from the fund, but it's a balance as to how much can be spent. The same **** is happening as the UK, but on a smaller scale. More millionaires are being created and the 'general' wealth is increasing IE, the wealth of the wealthy... Yet despite my take home pay in my last salary being significantly higher than 25 years ago, I seem to be able to afford less. 40 years ago, someone with my career, which was traditionally a skilled blue collar job, could afford a house, a car, holidays, a wife who worked part time, a cabin etc and to retire around 60, after working fewer hours than I have had to. Nowadays, with a student loan on top usually, there's no chance of living the same kind of life unfortunately.
Great line up on Late Jools Holland tonight... PULP. Suzanne Vega... the girl Nectar Woode was excellent too...
Should have been posted... congratulations Simon Yates winning the Giro D'Italia... fantastic achievement...
Had to go to Castle Hill Day Surgery today for a pre op assessment... what a fabulous building. I thought it must be brand harry spankers it was so clean and tidy but apparently open for two years. its being expanded to incorporate 10 maybe 12 operating theatres. Staff were fabulous too.
