Like you say, the away section being moved will be a good thing. I always think having away fans that close to the goal and pitch could work against a home team. it's ideal for us at Newcastle because the away fans are miles away from the pitch which in theory should be a massive bonus against teams who hardly bring any fans. Doesn't always work out that way mind haha.
We are doing the same as you mate, up a height. I worry about your lot above our lot at the derby, but then it seems to be ok at St James. Rumours of flying piss etc seem to be just that.
