I got the Todorov bit, but his first name is just a good scrabble score.

CAN YOU NAME THIS POMPEY YOUNGSTER?

My football began while attending Emsworth Primary School and I came to Pompey’s notice while playing for Havant & District.

Ray Pointer, the former Burnley, Pompey and England centre-forward, was the youth-team manager and he came to my house and offered me apprentice forms. This was in 1973 and I was then aged 15.

I eventually became a Pompey apprentice in the summer of 1974. The other lads that joined with me were Peter Denyer, Keith Viney and Paul Bennett, who all later played in the first team, and Kevin Handelaar and Gary Tompsett.

Unfortunately, the first team weren’t doing so well. John Mortimore was the manager when I signed as an apprentice but he didn’t last much longer. Ron Tindall was put in temporary charge before Ian St John was appointed.

The new manager took over a club with no money and a team of ageing pros. They managed to stay in the second division in his first year but when the season ended he released a lot of the older players which was half the team.

He had little alternative but to introduce the youngsters into the side.

My youth team-mates Steve Foster and Chris Kamara had already appeared for the first team when I was named as substitute for a league cup game with a then first-division side at Fratton Park. The match was goalless when I went on with 20 minutes to go.

Within three minutes I had scored but they managed to equalise. I was given a few more games during the season and scored a couple more goals.

One was against another first-division side we held at Fratton Park, this time in the FA Cup – we beat them in the replay – and another in the league.

We were, not surprisingly, relegated from division two that season and I only appeared once more for Pompey – as a substitute in a League Cup second-leg tie.

I remained at Fratton until the end of the season and was then released.

I never played football for money again after the age of 21.
