Mate I was totally hooked after the first 2 or 3 episodes - These reviews speak volumes http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0306414/ (nothing gets 9.7 on IMDB) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wire-Comple...HG1S/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1317052916&sr=8-2
I don't think so bluff - He plays a part (albeit small) in Boardwalk Empire, well last season at least. Can't say I was a fan of The Wire though. Found season 1 very slow and just as I really started to enjoy it (seasons 2 and 3) it started to go down hill after. Don't get me wrong, the acting is very good, but I just found myself not really giving a **** about what happened to any of the characters. I empathised with no one and the plot wasn't strong enough to leave me itching for the next episode each time. I blame The Sopranos for the ridiculouly high standards that I now require from TV Shows.
Just saw a lot of RIP pictures of him, so wasn't sure if it was for the Wire ending on the actual guy dying. Sopranos was really good, Dexter is the only current show I keep up with, nothing really jumps out at me. Breaking Bad I hear is worth a try might try that one.
The great Soprano's vs The Wire debate rears it's ugly head! Both great shows in my opinion, The Wire edges it for me due to the complexity of it, whereas I found the Soprano's a bit too obvious.
Breaking Bad is very good. AMC really pulled their finger out for that one (unlike the incredibly dull Mad Men). They also do the Walking Dead which is great: I love zombie films so watching a TV series (with the budget and effects of a blockbuster) about a zombie apocalypse is right up my street. I watch Dexter but haven't really enjoyed it since season 2 ended. Feels like they've run out of ideas really. Other shows that are definately worth a watch are Brotherhood and The Shield (now finished) and Game of Thrones (if you even remotely enjoyed Lord of the Rings then this is like that but better) and many many more. US TV shows pretty much got me through University when I had to do assignments.
Yea it's as big of a fan-boy war as the 360 vs PS3 "debate". *Possible Spoilers!!* [NSFW] TBH I have no idea why I never got on with The Wire at all. I thought I'd at least enjoy it but I can't say that I did. Did you not find it's lack of continuity slightly annoying? The whole cast for the last season or two was completely different which really really annoyed me and just as I started to love a character they go and get themselves ****ing killed when I least expect it [/NSFW]
Certain characters getting killed was slightly annoying, but to be honest I think it's done for the reality of the story and it works. As they would say 'it's all in the game'!!... I personally loved it from start to finish and you're the first person I've met so far that didn't get on with it. I guess it's just personal preference, but I would certainly say The Wire is better than The Sopranos. Interestingly IMDB say The Wire is 9.7 and The Soprano's is 9.4 - This alone suggests they are both must watch series.
can't believe how low 24 is on that list, people over here f***ing love Jack bauer! Some good ones I will get into are Oz,24, and Prison Break. I got a lot of catching up to do. please log in to view this image
Yea I've no doubt that I'm in the minority when it comes to the wire although IMDB isn't massively accurate when it comes to TV - Most people review within the first few episodes or seasons rather than all seasons with a retrospective review. Lost for instance is 8.5: No doubt that during its hayday it was that but the last season or two was average at best compared to the earlier ones. Although lost is in a different league (ie a ****ter league) compared to the shows that HBO produces.
Please don't watch prison break! OR pretend that it ends after the second season! The first season was immense and the second too but, as the name suggests, there's only so much story they can milk from this series and it shows. The rest was pants and the final season, well, don't get me started. 24's great although after 5/6 series it gets very samey - Every year and a half there's a new nuclear threat :/. Oz is very good but more like a mature soap-opera than anything else, still worth a watch though.
100% agree. The first 2 seasons of prison break are up there with the best TV about, after that it runs out of steam. Worth watching the first 2 seasons though. 24 is very good, I personally got bored after 3 seasons of it as it becomes too predicable. OZ is excellent, agree it's in a sense more of a mature soap, still excellent though and I would highly recommend it.
I'll still watch it but I get where you are coming from with where do we go from here plots. I loved LOST but at the end, they went so many different directions to keep the story fresh that is was impossible to tie it all together, still not sure what was going on to be quite honest but it was a sick show.
There's a new show tonight called Terra Nova (8 eastern on Fox I think, Bluff) which sounds like a mix of LOST and Primeval. "# Summary: In the year 2149, humankind seeks escape from the polluted Earth by traveling to the past to establish a new colony. " Mostly good reviews from the pilot but remains to be seen if it will take a more mature path or be a family-fun kind of show which means I won't be arsed with it.
Ya I seen that and there is another show where they are on an island, very similar to LOST. Not sure what to think of it really. Right now am mainly waiting for Dexter and catching up with shows I have missed out on.
Personally I couldn't watch a Science fiction series, that's the reason I've always avoided Lost, Primeval, Heroes etc etc. I need an element of reality in it to keep me engaged. That's obviously personal preference as Ive never been a Science fiction fan. I didn't even like Star Wars when I was a kid
