What would everyone say to Pardew rewarding Ameobi's loyalty by giving him the No. 9 shirt, yes he wont be a 'great No. 9' but he deserves a reward from the club surely?

Doesn't he like the number 23?

I'd rather not give it to Shola, despite his loyalty...

might as well to be honest. after the last two no.9's its starting to lose its greatness!

I said after Alan Shearer retired, the number 9 shirt should be retired and after the last two wearers of the shirt, I still stick by my claim. While I was a big fan of Oba, he just wasn't number 9 material, and everyone knows what happened with Andy Carroll and the famous shirt.

Retire the great number and let's not diminish the legacy and history of the shirt any further.

Shola can't have it. Lovenkrands, Best and Ranger aren't worthy either. The next 9 has to earn it.

i think the number 9 shirt needs to keep some ideals. Keep it til the summer and hopefully a big name signing can have it

I'm all for keeping the no.9, but dont think we should give it to whatever new signing we bring in in the summer.

Lets wait until the player's been here at least a season or 2, remains entirely loyal to the club, and is a great goalscorer.

It'd be better if it had been retired with Shearer, but to retire it now would leave it forever tarnished. Got to just keep going with it until we get our next legendary striker.

If we were to keep it going, I would wait until Ranger settled in and played a few seasons, week in, week out, and then hand it to him. I think he is a player who would show loyalty in return for the respect and guidance given to him. He has also come across as someone who needs support and an arm around him, and I think as he matures and gains experience, he could potentially become our next great number 9.

I dont think retiring the shirt would be a good idea. years down the line remembering the last wearer was a money grabbing Judas... Also kids dream of wearing the number 9, I know I did growing up watching Shearer, we need another idol to wear it not just anybody.
