Neither need the World Cup for their legacy, obviously it would been the icing on the cake but they’re still the best of the best without it. The Maradona shadow will hang over any Argentine player because of his international exploits
Maradona has long been casting a shadow over Argentina because somebody had to inherit the No10 shirt. The likes of Ariel Ortega and Juan Roman Riquelme were weighed down by the pressure of wearing that shirt to the point the AFA lobbied FIFA to retire the number - and it wasn't until Messi came along that they had a player who didn't get consumed by the weight of the shirt In comparison, the Dutch don't have this issue because Cruyff wore the No14 which allowed the likes of van Basten, Gullit, Bergkamp, van der Vaart, Sneijder et al to get on with it, while Brazil don't have any issues with their No10 shirt as Zico inherited it and things were fine, although it is telling how sometimes it's a badge of honor for someone like Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Kaka or Neymar to wear it - others they just chuck in on someone like Paulo Silas or Rai
For all his critics and despite the hand of God, Maradona remains the only player to win the WC almost single handed, that Argentinian team as an 11 is nowhere near level of the Kempes, Ardiles, Passerella team of 78 and without Maradona its likely they would have struggled to get past us in the quarter final, even with him it was a great game decided by one of the greatest goals ever scored at a world cup. And lets not forget that 4 years later he carried an even weaker team to another final and they took a very good German team all the way.
Equal distribution of assists. I'm sure the games taken to set the record is a lot less than for the old one too.
From thikipedia ... Most assists from one player to another: : 24, Frank Lampard to Didier Drogba Get your bets on for when this one will be bettered by.
How good is Harry Kane? Right now he is having the same impact on our games that Bale did in his last season with us before his transfer to Real Madrid. His ability to pick a pass and make it is on top of the world and we all know his ability to find the corner of the net. Add to that his hold up play and ability to keep the ball and you have one of the worlds best players.
If only he could take a free kick , his weak spot , he must spend hours in training taking free kicks but in a game it does not click
As good as the stats for his club + domestic league + internationals tell us (a forward whose like you tend to see once over many years) .
Probably worth noting that if Kane scores in his next match, then he'll be level with Frank Lampard. Our next league game is, naturally, against Everton.
Stats are the thing that tell me how good Kane is without ever actually needing to have seen one minute of any game he has ever played.
That's a Mandy Rice Davies moment. Stats will tell you whatever you want. Not actually seeing him play defines exactly how useless stats are when it comes to football.
Quite a low education statement (worsened by a Boomer cultural reference - if actually even appropriate) , because by definition it means if I want to show that Kane is not a great forward, the stats should allow me to do so (good luck with that - remember to "show your workings" ) .
No it means that as you define yourself by stats and there use, your comment is what I would expect you to say. However there is little point in pursuing this any further.
Played in 4 finals and 1. No assists 2. No goals 3. No key moments 4. Teams he played for only scored 1 goal in total. Played in 10 semi final games (8 competitions) and 1. 1 assist 2. Only scored 3 goals 3. Team he played for lost 5 semi finals Games Played 14 Won 4 Lost 10 scored 3 assists 1 *He was injured for the 2029 second leg semi final v Chelsea in league cup and both the semi final games v Ajax. **these are for England and Spurs Never won a trophy. These are stats that suggest he is not a big game player so there for is not "great". Stats can only ever tell you somethings...not the whole story in my honest opinion. And before anyone thinks I am blaming Kane I am just making a point about stats ... no hate please
Spot on in my opinion - whilst winning trophies should not define his career until he has helped us win a trophy he will always be behind some players with less impressive stats who did hold up a trophy. Of course this doesn't mean that his stats are worthless and he is a better player than many who have won trophies, (most of the man in raincoats for example)
And now Harry Kane has broken the record for Woolwich saddos all tweeting the exact same "joke" as the kid who lifted the Season Killer Cup yesterday lifting more trophies than Harry Kane...
