The central defenders will know they've been in a game anyway, he's got pace and power to burn (**** I sound like Hansen) but has definitely honed his touch and finishing.

Yeah, pleased with Hudds and Livermore, most fans surprised we managed to attract them but if they are fit, they'll start with us and game time is one thing we can offer.

    All the best for Saturday.

He only scores for the USA. Good luck getting 10 goals out of him.

Based on 3 years ago my feelings were huge mistake. Having watched, listened to and seen him play, he looks a totally different player.

My feeling is he could be awesome for us. Should I be dogmatic on my thoughts to make you feel better? Erm....... Negative.

Yeah have to agree here cest - I thought the same when we were linked - remember him from his Hull days when he was very poor - but he looks a totally different player now - hope this is the case in the Premier League as well - a goal on Saturday to start him off and I'll be happy. Was disappointed with him against Man City and he should've scored 3 against Spurs but his finishing was poor - looked much better last night - That free-kick was awesome!

Cheers fella, Sounds better than the 38 goals in 67 games I was referring to. Still better than 1 in 2. By Gum it's a good goalscoring record. Hope he breaks his duck for us quick.

Think he just needs the first goal to get his confidence going.

The American striker scored just one league goal in a season on loan at Hull four years ago but is a very different "animal" these days

Paolo Di Canio has insisted new striker Jozy Altidore is an “animal” who will destroy Premier League defences this season.

USA international Altidore scored a stunning second-half hat-trick for his country against Bosnia in midweek (see below), setting himself up perfectly for Sunderland’s opener against Fulham on Saturday.

The 23-year-old had a prodigious goals record for previous club AZ Alkmaar, netting 38 times in 67 games to earn a £6million switch to Wearside.

Di Canio is delighted with the Black Cats' target-man.

The Italian says his flop last time in the top flight - Altidore scored one league goal on loan to a relegation-bound Hull side for the 2009-10 season - was because he “was only a boy” and expects greater things from his second crack at English football.

“I have brought him in and I don’t hope, I am sure he will be a success and with his characteristics he will score many goals," said Di Canio.

“He has come back and he is the kind of quality I need. He is the size I need. He jumps hard and he is an animal.

“He attacks every space and his first touch is good. He is fantastic finisher and that is a good mixture. We will play good football to help him to score and he is going to have a big part to play this year.

“All the signals that we have seen are positive.

“He is a modern footballer, like you saw for the USA. He can make lovely movements.

“I don’t know a number, but it won’t be too hard to predict. Maybe 15 or 17. He will do it if he uses his energy like he did in the national team. He has desire and pride and I think this environment here will help him. We spent a good amount of money on him, he was not a free transfer.

“This is a player who did not have a fantastic experience three years ago at Hull, but he was young and in which environment? We don’t know. It wasn’t top level.

“But he left, grew up and went around Europe. He finished last year with a very good goals tally in a different league. You don’t score those numbers of goals if you are not quality.”

Di Canio is also pleased with the change in Stephane Sessegnon, who cut a quiet figure last season, and was deemed surplus to requirements in the summer.

A change of heart could be on the cards after Di Canio said: “I don’t want to say he’s becoming a joker. But he’s speaking at the table when they’re having lunch and making a joke.

“That proves that there’s been a change.

“It is not because of Paolo Di Canio. It’s because of the environment we’ve changed. It’s helped people to push out and relate with the others and show their personality.

“He is never going to be the most open man in the world because he is shy, but, with his team-mates, he is open.”
