I hear commentators refer to Australians as Aussies all the time, so what is the difference?

"However, the Echo now understands that Sunderland have not splashed out ANY extra money to land Defoe than they will receive for Altidore. Sunderland have essentially just conducted an exchange of strikers, rather than a player-plus-cash deal."

I once called someone a Brit, on here, but I think I got away with it .......

Are you f**king kidding me?! If this turns out to be true I would be well pissed off. We should of offered them Sagbo and Figueroa for Defoe. :emoticon-0101-sadsm

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...e-the-best-January-transfer-signing-ever.html

"The Black Cats have somehow managed to swap Jozy Altidore, a striker who has scored one Premier League goal for them in 18 months – and two in two-and-a-half seasons in English football – for a forward who is the ninth highest goalscorer in the history of the competition.

In other words, they have swapped a player with Toronto who, with the best will in the world, had become a joke on Wearside – albeit a fondly thought of one – for the closest thing you can get to guaranteeing goals in English football."

Right, in Steve Bruce's own words, "You're only as good as your strikers", what is he doing about this crisis? I've heard nothing so far..

How many white British mean it affectionately when they say "Paki"? While "Aussies" is a word used to describe people with whom we have a friendly rivalry.

Sorry mate, but they are both just shortened names for people who live in their respective countries. The only difference being is that one of them has now been deemed as racist. If you can be charged with racism for one then I would imagine that a court of law would have difficulty in not charging you with the other if ever an Australian decided to push it.

Generally when people here say "Paki" they don't mean it nicely. You know that to be true.

Regardless of that he's right. Both are simply shortened terms of the nationalities.

One is used a racist slur, the other isn't, to suggest otherwise is ridiculous.

It's all about the usage, intent and tone.

I refuse to believe you're not just trolling by making out there's no difference in the use of each word.

That's not what we said happy. We said one has now been Deemed to be racist when, in essence, neither are any different. The only difference between the two words is perception. If you call someone an "old bastard" then that is ageist (although it is normally taken in good heart as I get this all the time!), if you call someone a "paki bastard" then that is racist, if you call someone an "Aussie bastard" then you are simply calling an Australian a bastard. As I said, perception

Edit - Mods this is not me being racist it is simply pointing out information. Cheers

I've been called a "Pommy Bastard" for 47 years. Hasn't worried me and never will.
Italians are referred to as "Dago's" or "Wogs".
    The Dutch as "Clog Wogs".
    The Americans as "Septic Tanks".
    The Aborigines as "Black-fellers"!
An Aboriginal bloke who became a close friend over the years was known as "Johnny Black-feller". He was called this for years as nobody knew his surname until he joined the "Lodge".
