Barton hails Newcastle fans ahead of QPR clash

SUPPORT ... Joey Barton has hailed the Toon Army.

JOEY Barton has paid tribute to Newcastle United’s fans ahead of his old club’s visit to Loftus Road.

The midfielder left St James’s Park in controversial circumstances last month.

And Barton will make his Queens Park Rangers debut on Monday night in a televised clash against Newcastle.

The 28-year-old has spoken warmly of United’s support ahead of the game, having forged a strong bond with the fans over the past two seasons.

“The fans were brilliant at Newcastle,” Barton told QPR’s official website.

“In my last couple of seasons there, they’ve supported the football club through thick and thin. I’ll always have a relationship with them.

“We had a journey with them – not just me, but a number of players in the squad – when the club dropped out of the Premier League.

“That could have been a difficult and turbulent time in the club’s history, but we regrouped as a playing staff and decided that we’d dig deep and not only get the club back to the Premier League, but to stablise it quite comfortably last season.

“What’s gone is gone. I’m never going to say a bad word about the football club or the fans. I wish them every success.”

It does make you wonder how he will get on with us far more fickle Londoners. That kind of blind faith that typifies support like Newcastle, Pompey or Leeds is a million milesaway from our more 'discerning' appreciation of the game.

Trust me QPAAAAAGH i've been supporting the Hoops for 42 years now and every one of them has been through blind faith.I'm pretty sure most of us fall into the same category,if he gives his all for us we'll show him the same adoration given to the likes of Stan the man and Sir Les!!

Interesting theory there. We do have our fair share of "blind-faithers" some of whom are members of this forum but I'd like to think that we do, in fact, have a more "discerning" type of supporter than those Circus Clubs you mentioned. It will be interesting to see how Barton reacts to bird from the fans after having a stinker.

He'll probably go out and knife some old pensioner feeding the birds on the green <yikes>

I was having my doubts about all the signings but am already beginning to feel we have a real good chance and I believe Barton could get us ticking, This is based on what NW did last year over the summer ... I reckon the focus with be on NW not the team

I think he'll become a fan favourite, he went from being mutually hated by the entire fanbase at NUFC to a cult hero in a matter of a season, that's how good he is when fit and on form.

That's correct Oddball. That worries me though. If/when we lose a few on the spin and a few decisions go against us, will Nelly be able to remain calm or will he explode into a vicious tirade like he has in the past? He ses he's mellowed in old age. I really hope that's the case.
