Alonso: Seeing him tonight it was easy to see why Rafa prefered Barry

Discussion in 'Liverpool' started by Jeremy Hillary Boob, Jun 23, 2012.

  1. You'll never change <doh>

I suggest you take your tinted specs off and actually watch him play. the only bit in there that is true is the running <ok>

You telling me he has a good touch and good passing/vision? Give me a break mate. He is absolutely diabolically awful.

  3. Now you're putting words into my mouth <doh>

    You said:

Which I disagreed with. At what point does that suggest he as "good vision"? <doh> If a ball is played to him high or low, he usually comes out with it at his feet before laying it off to a teammate (so long as he actually as the option *cough*Rooney*cough*). That's a simple five or ten yard lay off, not a exquisite fifty yard through ball <doh>

Compared to other target men, he rarely gives the ball away but then, what would you know about target men being an Arsenal fan? You've not had one of them for years! Bendtner...??? <laugh>

Well said. He is a limited player who's only "ability" is flicking goal kicks into empty spaces.

We need much better and we should go in for someone like Huntelaar and hope we can attract him to Liverpool.

Though I think Suarez will score much more next season (15-20 at least in the league).

If you play 4-5-1 with suarez as the focal point and play a passing game then I think you will do well next year. If you play carroll you can try to play that way but it wont work well. Also players get tempted to just lump it long when carroll is on the pitch. Suarez = liverpools best player. Play to him imo.

Pretty much. But Suarez as the lone striker does come with problems. The fact that he drops deep to search for the ball means you are often left with no one up top if you play midfielders who are not intelligent/unable to make runs in behind the defence to supplement for the lack of striker right up top.

Downing and Henderson were simply not penetrative or brave enough to compliment Suarez when he was playing upfront on his own. We ended up with a 4-6-0 formation with no one making runs beyond Suarez, which left us extremely deep and unable to create clear cut chances only half chances. The only one who could make the runs was Bellamy and he was sparingly used because of his knees.

If we are going to use Suarez as the striker then we need wide forwards instead of traditional wingers/wide midfielders. Players like Pedro, Walcott etc.

Think you get what I'm getting at anyway...

Then you haven't read me properly. It's a fact. And in fact not *a* season but every season and in fact not just more but around double. I never claimed it was a genius move by Rafa but it was clearly more thought out than a lot of the revisionism which has gone on. I've never said Alonso wasn't a class player. I did say Barry was underestimated, Alonso with us has been deified to ridiculous proportions (possibly because he's quite handsome and there's some homo-eroticism going on with you guys) and Rafa's reasons for wanting to get Barry (with or without Keane) were quite sound, which appears to have been missed in the rush to suck Alonso off.

You still can't explain why we only got one offer of £12m for Alonso when we were only asking for £16m. Could Alonso have just started peaking in his last season and continued at Real, making him better now in a Spain side than he was then in a side beginning to show signs of H&G's squad erosion? In the words of Hong Kong Phooey, could be.

Rafa didn't want to lose Alonso and neither did I. He wanted to add Barry and if you think Barry had nothing to offer go back to the number of times I've said England results turned around once McLaren dropped Lampard for Barry. We weren't going to qualify. We were ****. Gerrard was better with Barry and so were England. I've also never said Lampard wasn't class because he was better with Barry rather than Gerrard, too. When Bellamy was voted City's best player, in a squad of big money players, who was the supply behind him? Gareth ****ing Barry.
