Mally Lord once ran on as a substitute at Boothferry Park and the booing of his name was horrendous. I'd never heard booing like it at the time and I haven't since. I never saw what the poor lad did wrong either and for me he was always a 100% wholehearted player who got stuck in. Just goes to show that fans are like sheep sometimes and when one player becomes unpopular for some obscure reason and everyone jumps on his back. In Lords case it was because he was from Hull and he was crucified for it.
Once bumped into him in later life and I asked him 'Aren't you Mally Lord' ?
He said ' I used to be'.
I agree it was shocking the abuse he got, I think you're right about the Hull lad thing, the only player who came close to his level of abuse was another Hull lad, Mike Edwards. Football fans do like a boo boy, mores the pity.

He was only given a trial at City when his old man offered to paint ( he was a painter) one of the stands for free if they gave his lad a trial. Cottingham born. I was once in a social club in the middle of Cottingham when Pearson was playing for England which was being shown on the television in the club. He scored that day and I swear no-one even paused or looked up from their bingo cards when the ball hit the back of the net......and he was one of their own! Joined the Cott Branch of the OSC and they hadn't even heard of him.
There was once a tiny photograph of him on the wall when the old King Billy pub in town was attempting to be a Sports Bar.
Cheers for that, it's how I recalled him - the old memory sometimes sticks doubt in the old head though.

alzheimer's is just one form of dementia. repeated blows to the head from heading a heavy football, much like being hit in boxing, are like lots of mini-concussions. the brain isn't made to be shaken about in the cranium. muhammad ali's parkinson's is undoubtedly a result of being hit. he made comebacks at ages he shouldn't have.
Saw Steve Richards the other day, must still live local, not sure if born in Hull but a youth player who I recall got the old 'Richards, your ****' from Kempton more than once.
I was at that game against Portsmouth. I seem to remember we were 4 up in about first 20 minutes with Phil Holme scoring one as well. Definitely a favourite at the time but inlike Chillo he left to fulfill his potential elsewhere.
And another local lad Jeff Hemmerman used to get a lot stick but once got goal of the month on Motd. Had a good career in lower leagues at Pompey and Cardiff I think.

Jeff Hemmerman did get goal of the month on MOTD for City away at Wolves. At the end of season vote off for 'goal of the season' Hemmerman's goal had mysteriously disappeared.

I was at that game at Hillsborough with my girlfriend who was a Wednesday supporter. I heard Pearson actually called the lino a "****ing onion" but regardless, I thought it pretty funny and a bit harsh when you consider how players gob off at officials these days. Swan had just returned to Wednesday after a ban for bribery and that evening at dinner after City had lost, I suggested that Swan had perhaps paid off the officials. The girlfriend's father never spoke to me again. I often wonder how life worked out for that girl. I was in love with her but she recognized that at the time, I was more in love with myself and moved on. SIGH!
Mixed marriages rarely work, so good job. Once went out with a Leeds United mad lass who used to object to my preference to going back to Hull for every City match rather than accompanying her to see the TWS. Some times these things are not meant to be.
I remember when I lived in Leeds one of the main lads, who ended up with one hell of a job and was very successful in later life , was given an ultimatum by his really attractive girlfriend it was Leeds United or her. He replied there were millions of females but only one Leeds United. Poor lass, no one dared chat her up knowing who her ex was.
