I think he is versatile, and that will give them options.

He could play as a partner to Pique or the De Rosi role (Euros), when Pique isn't around. People don't remember but Song has covered competently as a CB for us in the past, and played almost a full ACON a few years back as a CB for his country. Why would that matter?

Well... from the matches I've seen this year Pique, to Barcelona and the way they play, is more a holding midfielder than a CB most of the time. Their whole team camps on the opponents half so they really haven't got much use for classic CB's who can't link up with others. They need players who are good defensively but are also good on the ball, can hold the ball under pressure, and are creative.

Song has played a more advanced role this year because it was asked of him, not because he doesn't have defensive instincts.

While I would like Song to stay, I think his versatility would help him make it in Barcelona, more than any of the other players in our squad who are more 'specialized' in their roles.

Dont forget we will lose Song for up to 2 months for the ACN again this season.

That is one reason I would be less bothered to see him go and replaced by someone who we will not lose every ywo years. For example, what would you prefer, Sahin for a whole season or Song for 7 months?

We should try the old Private Eye tactic of concocting a ridiculous story and seeing if they run with it. On a completely unrelated matter, did you lot hear the rumours that Birmingham City Ladies have offered Van Persie a 200k contract and £5 million signing on fee subject to gender reassignment surgery?

Part of me thinks these are Barca tactics to pretend they've other options to Martinez. I'd certainly be very surprised if he went there and slightly miffed at his lack of loyalty. Still, I'd get over it, especially if we got ourselves around the £20m mark and used it to get a replacement.
