I think Carroll requested a transfer and Ashley actually tried to keep him before that. Ashley is generally a **** but this particular episode is not his fault.

Let's be honest, Andy was only worth 35+ for us as a loyal local lad who'd spend his career here. The second he ends his posturing and requests a transfer, 35m suddenly becomes a great price. If he really wants out (which apparently he does), you've got to take that money, and I'm sure Pardew understood that. No arguing that. It's what I was telling friends all day (non-Newcastle supporters of course) who didn't understand why we weren't biting their hands off to get the money. But if he doesn't want to be here, you almost have to take the offer, even if we'll never see the money on the pitch.
