Yeah one time I was in back of plane from New York and there was a big flash and bang

Lightening struck plane and broke off some rid the pilot said ten mins later

Surprisingly little chaos in the plane itself cos lots heard and saw it

Have had more scared people with aborted landings

Heathrow always has airplanes dilly dallying on runways and flight aborting

Had a bombardier airplane going interal in states in high cross winds, twin prop and rocked and rolled. Had to mind an old dear and told her all about turbulence

I don't mind as I can't control any of it

Worst I had was Cessna 182 doing skydive, pilot had to use biro to change radio channel cod knob was gone. He took off at about oh 12 feet, skirted ditch then pulled vertical and pinned is to floor with g force

First guy out of plane was so ****faced he completely mucked it up and went unstable on exit and was on reserve shoot. I was third out and did perfect jump

When they open that door and you look out...... Well

Not that it really matters, but apparently there were at least three Brits abroad.

What would you be thinking if the Pilot announced before take off that they have problem with landing gear?.
It happened to me once before.. I was thinking should I cancel my journey?.
Luckily the problem was rectified and we were delayed for two hours.:emoticon-0100-smile

So that's what the black box looks like. These things are bombproof and it's been totally mangled. Must be grim on that slope, plane's been obliterated.

Low cost airlines, at least those running successfully and expanding (easyjet, Ryanair etc...) tend to have much younger fleets than the more luxury airlines do who have been large established airlines for a longer period of time, as the growth of the low budget section of the industry has resulted in regular new plane orders.

Having worked on planes it's horrible to think what the crew would have been dealing with in this type of situation. Hopefully they find the reason for the crash quickly.

    Who knows ?

In general it seems the younger the plane the more fuel efficient so lots of budget airlines have newer Kane's but I dunno

That wreckage looks like it bloody ploughed right in so who knows what control of any was left. I cannot imagine it was any sort of controlled crash landing so I cannonly conclude something catastrophic happened after the mayday call

Fault with communication system can explain that. .but I doubt that. Suicide pact by pilots?. Only God knows.:emoticon-0153-broke

No, they didn't put out an emergency distress call/signal. This is what the 'eight minutes of silence' is all about. There were eight minutes from the time of the plane's last communication and when it started to descend, to the time it hit the mountain when the pilots should have been communicating, but weren't. Then it hit the rock face.

So they weren't able to put out any kind of signal or emergency call. This leaves only two real possibilities:

    1. They couldn't give one - Either they were too busy trying to control / fly the plane, or they were under duress (terrorists), or they were incapacitated (unconscious / gravely injured)
    2. They didn't want to give one - Pilot suicide / Terrorist threat to harm them or their families or passengers / Thought they could get out of the trouble they were in

These are very different potential scenarios for those final eight minutes. The first indicates they were trying to get the plane down as safely as possible and ran out of time or couldn't navigate properly. The second one indicates they ditched the plane either to end their lives or in a last gasp bid to stop whoever was holding them (I think expert analysts have already ruled out terrorism as the cause) or just made a terrible misjudgement.

They need to listen to the black box to see who was speaking in the cockpit in the last moments.

On further reading it seems the plane did a controlled descent into the ground. It kept a steady speed and rate of descent all the way into the ground. It's also possible passengers didn't realise the plane was descending in a fatal way throughout the experience as the rate of descent is similar to when coming in to land a plane.

Some papers are quoting an unnamed source within the investigation team as saying one of the pilots was stuck outside the flight deck trying to get in. But no clues as to how that situation occurred.

I'd imagine over the next few days we will get a better idea of what happened though it could be a long time before they know exactly what went wrong.

BBC news this morning has updates from the cockpit recorder. One of the pilots was locked out of the cockpit, desperately trying to get back in. Can't have been a good way to go.

Sorry didn't notice the post above saying just this ^

When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last, some day you'll most certainly be right." It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "no" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something. ~Stanford University, 2005

The idea that the plane was flying fine and the passengers were sat watching the pilot trying to smash the cockpit door in as they steadily descended to certain death for 8 minutes is the worst possible scenario.

The abject terror those poor people must have gone through is unimaginable.

Sounding highly likely that it was a suicide, and if so what a selfish ****er.

Just been confirmed that the co-pilot started the descent deliberately and the pilot was locked out of the cockpit.

    Murdering 150 people.

    Words fail me....

Crazy stuff. I think this is the last thing anyone wanted to think, but it does explain a lot sadly. Makes you wonder if he'd been reading conspiracy theories about MH370 and that plane's suicidal pilot. Shows how much trust as a passenger you put in people like pilots when you fly to be sane and not suicidal psychos.
