Yeah it's something I've never got either. The players are there because, you know, it's their job. They might be having an off day, they might be feeling down or they simply might not be bothered that day like any other ****er around. But then you have a few thousand people critiquing them and everything they do, 99.9% of whom couldn't even come close to their level of ability in their job even in their worst possible day. And these people have turned up optionally and chosen to spend their own money, but it's your fault because you happen to be a much more talented individual than them and earn more money.
If I paid £3,000 to go to Baku just to watch my team walk around in the second half of a final, I’d expect them to come up to personally and hand me my refund, let alone a clap of appreciation.
I'd expect Ozil to nosh me off for 3k. A clap of support should be a given in circumstances like last night.
