And that's the irony. Since Brexit we now have less power to return illegals/asylum seekers to the continent than we had before. And we had lots of powers while in the EU that would have made it more difficult for people to move here, that we never used and never had the political appetite to use. It was all a lie, as of course some of us knew, and are seeing now.
But aside from that, I saw a video from Rory Stewart yesterday saying about the number of troops that we station in South Korea (can't remember the exact number now). If we have the resource to do that, then why the heck did we not have the resource to station 2,000 or so for longer in Afghanistan? It required minimal resource (in the grand scheme of things) and until recently it was relatively low risk (no deaths in a good few years). And it would have kept relative peace and no immediate terrorism risk.
I'm not a huge conspiracy theorist but Julian Assange always said the Afghan war is never a war that is meant to be won, it is a war that is meant to go on indefinitely, as a means to channel funds. It does almost feel as if we (i.e. our political establishment) almost wanted this crap to happen.
We need to withdraw from the EU agreement to start governing our own borders. With the help of the armed forces, Border Force and all, there is no possible reason why we can't prevent these dinghies entering British waters to start with. Another suggestion made which I thought was interesting was the use of radar from Kent to the French coast which is quite capable of picking up even small craft, and as soon as one it detected we alert the French who can intercept before any craft is a mile or less from shore. Of course the French could spend some of the near £100m we given them and cut out the middle man, but they have no incentive to do so.
As for Afghanistan, and bearing in mind it was American led to start with, if the senile old man pretending to be the US President used any of his remaining grey matter, he and his advisors would have known that doing this the way they have was a mistake of monumental proportions (even for the US military, who have a long and impressive record of screwing things up at this level) and that's without the billions of dollars of kit, weapons and ammunition that's basically been left behind and given to the Taliban for free to use against the west to the cost of the average American tax payer. Companies such as Lockheed and Boeing will now make even more money when the US military asks them for replacements !
The Taliban can impose sharia law over the country and maybe there will be some stability and women may not be subjected to the horrors of before 2000, but it wont stop hot headed young idealistic and brainwashed Taliban individuals or smaller groups carrying out atrocities against their own people and us, given half a chance.
The average age of the Afghan population right now is just 18 years old. Think about that for a second.
That is due to the ongoing conflict, Afghan women having larger families, a shorter overall life expectancy and such like. Here it is 40 !
People of 18 years old don't always make rational decisions
