FA Youth Cup (U18s) - 4th Round Draw

If the lads get through against Middlesborough in the re-arranged tie tomorrow (Motspur Park ko 12.30), they face Arsenal away.

Despite some injuries (Cauley Woodrow is the latest) and losing a friendly away to Charlton last weekend (0-2), the team has been in really good league form recently. I'd expect them to see off a struggling Middlesborough team.

    FA Youth Cup (U18s) - 3rd Round

    Fulham 6 Middlesborough 4 (aet)

The good news before the start of today’s FA Youth Cup tie against Middlesborough was that Cauley Woodrow was declared fit. The Fulham line-up was :

Oberschmidt, Donnelly, Evans, Arthurworrey, Passley, Sambou, Roberts, Hyndman, Woodrow, Tankovic, Williams

Subs, Granger (GK), Della Verde, Richards, Dembele, O'Reilly

Boro took an early lead through Elsdon with a fine shot from the edge of the box, but Fulham hit back quickly with an equaliser by Emerson Hyndman.

George Williams after 40 mins made it 2-1 and a couple of minutes later Cauley Woodrow added another from the penalty spot. In a first half dominated by Fulham, with Pat Roberts the outstanding player, the team went in 3-1 up.

Starting as they had done in the first half Boro pulled one back 5 mins after the restart and only 10 mins later equalised through goals by Jones. The game was end to end stuff with both keepers making fine saves. Boro went down to ten men when Tinkler was sent off for two yellow cards, but they managed to hold out and take the game into extra time.

Boro repeated the first and second act by going ahead in the first period of extra time through McCarthy. In a pulsating game Fulham levelled in the second period with a super-sub goal from Moussa Dembele. This was the incentive needed and two more goal by Cauley Woodrow and Maumer Tankovic saw the team go through 6-4 winners. And a game against Arsenal in the next round.

    Manchester City 1 Fulham 1 (U21s)

Flatmates Matthew Briggs and Kerim Frei were in the side, while only five subs (one who is on loan and two from the U18s) travelled. The full line-up was -

Etheridge Brister Pritchard Musa Briggs Williams Tavares Christensen Banya Altman Frei

Subs: Bettinelli Passley Donegan Islamovic Woodrow

After an even start, when the only shot on goal came from City, Fulham went ahead through Ryan Williams with a powerful finish from 15 yards. The game got a bit scrappy after that and the only attempts at goal (by City) were well handled by Etheridge. Fulham went into half time leading 1-0.

The second half started with the rain chucking it down Lancanstrian style which seemed to favour the home team who equalised only 3 minutes in. Evans scoring from all of 40 yards. With the rain still pouring down both teams struggled to control the game. Fulham had a lucky escape when City hit the bar with 10 minutes to go but held out and it finished all square at 1-1.

The team finished in 5th spot, ahead of Crystal Palace and today’s opponents Man City. They might have expected to have done slightly better but the group had some strong teams. Ahead of us were ru away winners Liverpool, then Wolverhampton, Chelsea and Middlesborough. The team will now have to wait until after Christmas to find out who they play as new leagues are drawn up.

Here is a video clip of all the goals - worth a watch just to see the cheekiest free kick in a long time.

Although only seen in snippets on the video, a great performance from two of the youngest (and smallest) players - Pat Roberts (No. 7) and Emerson Hyndman (No. 8). Also good to see Moussa Dembele back from injury and on the score sheet again.

    U18s Triumph over Chelsea

    Fulham 2 Chelsea 1 (U18s)

The U18s played Chelsea today at Motspur Park in their last game of this particular league season. The result will not influence league standings as Chelsea have already guaranteed top spot with Fulham confirmed as runners-up before league changes are made and the next set of fixtures are announced for the New Year

    The Fulham line-up was -

Grainger, Sheckleford, Richards, Arthurworrey, O'Reilly, Donnelly, Evans, Della Verde, Dembele, Tankovic, O'Halloran

This was a first start for the youngsters Sheckleford and O’Haloran. Goalkeeper Grainger (I think he’s still on trial from Spurs) gets another run out.

The first real chance fell to Fulham as a Dembele shot was cleared off the line, but O’Halloran couldn’t convert the rebound. Chelsea started to control the game but their attempts on goal never really troubled Grainger and Fulham remained dangerous on the break. And just before half time Tankovic burst forward before cutting it back for Moussa Dembele to hit a left foot volley home. Fulham, slightly against the run of play, went in 1-0 at the interval.

Twenty minutes into the second half Maumer Tankovic pounced on a loose ball and smacked it into the top corner of the net to make it 2-0 to Fulham. Chelsea pressed back and although they had a penalty appeal turned down when Arthurworrey appeared to foul one of their players, they couldn’t break down a determined Fulham defence. On the hour Chelsea made a substitution and 3 minutes later Hunte scored for them to make it 2-1. The same player could have had another shortly over but blasted an easier chance over the bar.

The game started to open up and Evans missed an easy opportunity to seal the game for Fulham. With 15 minutes to go Fulham brought on three subs - Redford. Leacock-McLeod and keeper Norman (all being given their debuts for the U18s) for Evans, Dembele and Grainger. Fulham's Della Verde hit the post and although Chelsea came close a couple of times they couldn’t get the equaliser.

A tremendous win for the U18s and a really good league campaign; winning 8, drawing 1 and losing 3 and top scorers with a whopping 38 goals.

Footnote: That’s only Moussa Dembele’s 4th appearance ( 1 as sub) due to injury but he’s netted 5 goals !!

Briggs and Etheridge really do look awful in that one clip. I know one match doesn't always tell the full story, but these are supposed to be two players who have the potential to step up to the first team. I think not.

Agree Bandit, over the last year or so Briggs seems to be going backwards,
even the supporters of his loanee club did not rate him to highly,
I think Jol may also add to his goalkeeping squad next summer.
Wish we could find another Murphy and Dempsey.

With you on Briggs guys. Etheridge I think just had a bad day - he's much better (and consistently so) than that.

I know you didn't mean finding 'another M&D' from the Academy like right now rosc, but we know there is some real talent there (I still maintain Minky will be the next Murphy). And, okay it's going to take a couple of years but the U18s especially, are an exceptional bunch of lads.

Have no doubt that the youngsters are a talented bunch of lads, but why aren't any of them even making the bench for the first team? Jol handled the Kaca loan deal rather well by sending him out to a decent Championship team and recalling him after a good run of form where his confidence was sky high, the others however (Stockdale, Frei, Briggs, Dalla Valle, Trotta etc) have been handled poorly. If they are not good enough, and Jol should be able to know this by now, then we should get rid instead of just sending them out on another pointless loan, when a talented lad from the U18's could be taking their place on the bench.

It's a shame about Briggs, he looked like another Bale in the early part of last season.
