If you change 'English' to just about any other group, it would be at least equally valid, and more so in several cases, but you would have been castigating the author as racist. The Scots and Welsh are pretty proud and protective about their role in the Empire for a kick off.

The Empire? Can only speak for myself but I never cared for the British Empire or the even the United Kingdom as entity. I lean more towards Gladstone’s view than Disraeli’s.
