A thread to keep an eye on Roman's status in the UK. Apparently he now has an Israeli passport which allows him access to UK, but not to work. Will this impinge on his status/commitment with Chelsea. Will the long hoped for withdrawal of cash actually happen now. More wishful thinking, but he may decide he doesn't want to invest in this country any more?

To work he needs a visa and to get a visa he needs to explain where all his money came from. I will go out on a limb here and say he doesn't want to do that.

    Thoughts? Further details?

Definition of work when you are a billionaire is a moot point. He can come here for business meetings etc as long as he isnt in paid employment so it will make absolutely no difference to him. He won’t be able to live here i.e. come here for 6months pop out for a day and keep coming back but that’s no big deal for him anyway. He will probably flit between UK, Guernsey, Russia and Israel. Don’t see it why it would affect his investment in Chelsea - half the owners of PL teams are foreigners.

Unless he is pissed off at how he's being treated? If I'd invested as much as he had in a country, I'd expect a red carpet, not visa denial. You're probably right though.

I doubt he would throw away a billion pound investment because he is pissed off.
He can easily just employ someone in the UK to be his sock :)

Whilst I like the idea that all of these people with ill gotten gains need to explain how they have generated their wealth in order to work in the UK, something tells me that it would also implicate a fair number of british businessmen and politicians and they'll find a way to brush it all under the carpet.

It's a visa requirement, British businessmen don't need a visa.

Yes, of course. But the grounds for not granting a visa no longer apply. I'm sure if they are after Putin and his allies they can frame it in a way to stop him coming, depends how determined and how serious they are.

The reasons for refusing him a visa remain unchanged and unchallenged.

I'd be surprised to see him back here anytime soon.

Yes I know that, what I'm saying is that if people like Abramovich and others are forced to reveal how they generated their wealth then it would also likely implicate UK businessmen / Corporations / Politicians because I suspect many of them have got dirty hands in similar operations.

It would be, but as I said, I suspect that if it implicates UK corporations/politicians then they will find a way to try and sweep it all under the carpet.

It's possible that people like Abramovich made their wealth entirely in Russia without any outside help, but I suspect that there are plenty of dodgy billionaire businessmen around the world who operate with support from UK businesses.

The whole laundering of money through the City of London for a start. I wouldn't be surprised if half of those investment and share trading companies have (possibly unwittingly) helped to 'clean' up dirty money around the world.
