Not one of those holds a candle to the sustained excellence from MK over many years. McCartney as Clingo suggests is up there. Tom Petty another. Point in fact. Williams was a bit part in a boy band, cannot play an instrument, cannot sing, cannot write a tune, has no talent, is an embarrassment and is quite simply overrated beyond belief.
Some strong opinions there mate - not like you . My mum cured me of being hyper critical when it comes to music because it's so subjective. Wouldn't doubt MK's talent but for me he's not the same force as he is for you. It's surprising that Clapton hasn't been mentioned. Or Diana Ross. I agree that Robbie Williams mainly survives on the coattails of others but if music is there to move people, you can't fault his entertainment value. That said, I wouldn't go to see him. I love music and especially the passions it invokes in us humans. It's good that we don't all agree
Yes, very sad. He had been unwell for some time and only performed on 3 or 4 numbers when touring recently. My favourite band since early 70's. Only Steve Howe left in the band from that time.
I see Ray Liotta (Goodfellas) and the keyboard player from Depeche Mode, Andy Fletcher, also left us today. Bad day all round.
Just to lower the tone...I'm going to see Elton John tonight in Frankfurt!!!! Had a ticket for a concert of his in 1973 in London. Couldn't go.......went to Wales for the weekend and fell ill. I'm still holding tickets for his failed concert in Hamburg in 2020, 21 and 22. Is someone trying to tell me something?
Indeed. My favourite prog band was Genesis but went downhill after Gabriel left although enjoyed Trick of the Tail & Wind & Wuthering Then they went all Top of the Pops Seen Steve Hackett solo a few time’s - quality musician
I went to the Reading Festival a few times when I lived there and because I worked for the local newspaper I was able to get a backstage pass. Elton was on the lineup and when I visited the loo on one occasion the bloke next to me asked me if I was enjoying the show. It was only Elton himself. I replied in the affirmative and off he went to do his thing. To be honest I can’t remember his set as all my festival recollections are a bit ‘hazy’ but he is a great songwriter. Hope you enjoy the show Frank.
Elton Bog in the bog? Without wishing to be too controversial, you could have had a lucky escape there Irish.......
Well. This was in the seventies and I can’t remember if he had come out or was married to that Renate woman by then.
I think he was out. I recall watching him with other students singing on Top of the Pops with Kiki Dee and we were all thinking what a waste of time.......we'd have all happily sung with Kiki and it would have meant something!! Broke my heart it did!!!
My favourite band is ELO (post Roy Wood) - Jeff Lynne is a genius. I never get bored of listening to the Out of the Blue album in particular. Sadly only Richard Tandy and Jeff himself remain from the OOTB lineup.
The Beatles with strings - and that's by no means intended as an insult. As you say ELO is mainly made up of musicians that play regularly with a number of touring acts and that seems to have enhanced the original music. Great pop songs that stand the running of time. Have to envy you being able to nail down your favourite band. You could ask me the question every day for a month and you'd get about 25 different answers. But that's music I guess - there to enhance or create a mood and stir up sentiments. In fairness, ELO covered a lot of those bases
My first album of theirs was Face the Music. I was hooked on them right through to Balance of Power and only on lockdown discovered Eldorado, but the recent albums and his solo material, whilst great to listen to miss the ELO full vibe. Favourite track is Bluebird on Secret Messages obviously
Not sure if you’re a music man NO but Bluebird is one of my favourites too - and very easy to play on guitar.
I gave Zoom a listen after earlier post - some fab songs on that except my version doesn’t have the epic Long Black Road on it - don’t know why?
Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, George Harrison. Add a dash of Roy Orbison and a sprinkling of Bob Dylan and there you have it, The Traveling Wilburys.
