The times I watched Martin live at St Mary's, I thought he played well and did a solid job for us. He was shaky for the first 10 minutes of the Leeds game on the opening day and then looked solid.
last year he was playing with Jos or Jose, two strong experienced defenders. I do not know who he is playing alongside now, but he needs a leader
For me, Martin doesn't seem solid enough. He does a good tackle every now and then but he does give the ball away a lot. Whenever I've seen him play for Saints, he never looks that composed and first team football is needed to get him used to playing regularly. He never really played much in League one so I think that he should have been loaned to a League One club and move him up from there.
