Progress takes time and you have to learn. Sometimes the people starting the progress can only take it so far. Take many city for example. If we want to follow in their footsteps at some point hard decisions need to be made. It’s not always like you say all going to be rosy. Positive. Howe needs to start learning from these big night failures. That’s all I really ask.
The big clubs have set up as many obstacles as humanly possible for other clubs that want to compete.. it's hard enough to get in the top 4 because of FFP and even if you do the draws set up to make it as difficult as possible. Newcastle are actually not that far away but I personally now agree with Roland about the summer. Howe isn't tested or experienced at this level... this has been a fail... whether he can achieve another shot I guess we'll see in the coming year or two.
I think a lot of people underestimate the difficulty of playing in Europe if not used to it. From a players perspective and a managers. To go from 1 game every weekend where you can rest up, don’t have to rotate the squad as much and spend 4/5 days analysing and preparing the players for 1 team to suddenly only having 3 days between games, shorter time to do tactical stuff. Injuries have been unlucky but then if you’re playing the same players over and over you’re risking them getting more injuries. Then in a catch 22, lots of players injured so keep picking you’re best 11 but then risking even mor injuries to those same players. I think that’s where Howe and the coaching staffs inexperience at that level and this amount of games shows. Add in the high intensity and always going to struggle. We had similar issues with klopp. Players were run into the ground and worked well but almost seemed at a point they just got knackered and dropped off a cliff cos couldn’t carry it on (thinking fab and Hendo specifically last year). You were in a tough group. Maybe hit of naivety at the end to lose the game when a draw wojkd have at least for you into Europa and given you a good chance at gaining experience against different tactics European clubs use etc
Love how GG and Munse think their opinions on this forum have a single bearing on the results "Oh GG is positive, we best throw this one lads"
Game was wide open at the end tbf and we could have easily won it. I'm happy to go out of Europe now, experience has been good, and it's become too much of a strain on the squad. Also, unlike Man U, we've done ourselves proud and we're very unlucky not to go through.
The BBC match report is absolutely bang on the money. This whole "we're just plucky relegation contenders" is complete and utter bollox, sick of fans trotting that out as an excuse. It's like we're not allowed to take games in isolation, we must look at the bigger picture and thank our lucky stars we no longer have Ashley. Everton stuffed us, but let's not forget Steve Bruce. Tottenham smashed us, but let's not forget Sports Direct. Literally into the last 16 of the CL with half an hour to play and we ****ed that up, presumably because....erm....Dennis Wise? I maintain that recruitment in the Summer was ****. I'm not saying it's all Howe's fault but someone is saying Almiron and Murphy is an acceptable RW solution for a CL campaign, someone is saying that Schar/Lascelles is good enough, or Burn is a first choice LB, etc. We burned £120m on nothing. Neither Tonali, Hall or Barnes change that game. There is a stupidity about our play where we go absolutely mental - sometimes - for about 30 minutes, leaving nothing in the tank for the last third of a match. B'mth used to do the same thing. Then there's basically zero in game management. 1-0 is a perfect result, we go through, so can ANYONE explain why Schard decides to go racing up the field, get 20 yards from goal then tries to play a ****ING ONE-TWO IN THEIR PENALTY BOX?????? He can just take a shot, worst case it's a goal kick and he's back in central defence. It's not even hindsight - as he marched up field I'm screaming "just shoot, what are you doing???". I didn't think it could get worse than bottling it vs Liverpool, yet here we are, 4 losses out of the last 5 matches, completely out of Europe, with yet more soft tissue injuries and a trip to Chelsea looming. I'm now interested to understand at what point do people stop apologising for Howe? Not saying he should be sacked but he's making a right mess of things at the moment.
L The worms will all start turning in the next couple of months if this continues. It's a ruthless job ... see what they did to Bobby in the end! large numbers were after him the minute the milk turned even slightly sour. It happens everywhere fans praise them when it goes well and then go for their throats when it goes wrong. Howes done a brilliant job, but he's going to make mistakes.... it's like fans think he's a god that has made lascelles etc good .. more accurately they just have better players around them in training and on the pitch. If they got rid of howe it'll be a disaster more than likely so just let him keep going... all these managers are riding waves.
When Howe is eventually let go, they'll probably go for Jose Mourinho. I can't see anyone else for the job tbh.
That would be good tbh.... he's the perfect guy.... strong personalty and will attract fans attention in foreign markets. Newcastle are still an unknown small club from England and that's a tough nut to crack... need a big name and to win something... not sure we ever will.
Oh please good god no. When it all goes to **** with Mourinho (as it always does), he's more of a crybaby than Kinnear and Carver combined.
Do the players need to take some responsibility here as well ? I'm pretty damn sure Howe didn't tell Almiron to miss from 6 inches out or for Schar to go wandering upfield in last 10 mins
If Almiron had a right foot he would have scored he waited until the ball was going to his left foot and by that time the defender got his foot in Also Isak made no attempt to get back for the second goal after his half hearted challenge on their player breaking into our half
