The Prince of Wales in Hetton used to run a big pool handicap competition on a bank holiday Monday circa late 80's. They always had big bowls of tripe and onion on the bar and trays of curried eggs. Great day out but I was humming for weeks after.
Mam used to make a lovely cow heel pie. I was a little bit wary at first and mam tried to persuade me to try it because it was what made Desperate Dan strong. I was gullible but not that gullible! Then one day she made a stew with cow heel and unknowingly I ate it. After that I had no problem with cow heel.
My butcher is good as gold with me. He knows I will have most offal, and he charges me peanuts. Stuff goes to my dog, but plenty goes into our food as well, for flavour. Oxtail is popular now again, but he always saves the ugly stuff and we have it in a stew and it is magic. I buy my weekly meat shop on a saturday and there is always a few extras chucked in from under the counter for me.
