Instead of choosing picks based on 'world class' status, since world-class is subjective, what about picking players based on a pool from each (main) league across Europe or from a pool of players based on a set number of teams?
So everyone gets to pick one player from each Premier League club type of thing? end up with a squad of twenty players each?

I will draw the names out of a hat to pick the running order, and we will reverse the running order for the 2nd round
This. Think it is an old school almost trading card style pick em and we all try to make the best team that we can. Used to do this in college with Fifa. Would devise a "draft" ( I know American as **** that!) and you had to create your team, etc. EDIT: SJD, if you have FIFA, you could create a seperate save file and assign the players we all end up with on some ****ty team or create a team and we can kind of see what the team looks like.
