A structure as old as the towers and the height and pressure with materials it was built with put on it. I am not saying the salt factor was the only one, as I am a beleiver in a chain reaction. Forth Rail Bridge and Road Bridge good examples of structure built to last, The rail bridge good thick steel unlike the towers in comparison as it would of of cost 3x as much to consturct, But gen the Rail road bridge needs guys going up and down 365 days year keeping the corrosion at bay with super thick paint at £300 per square meter. Then you talk about Concrete, salt probably attacks concret faster than Steel, so that blows yer theory.
....but the buildings were completely cladded in glass and composite panels, very little structural steel or concrete would have been exposed to the elements.
