Mike, I can't remember the last time the government of the UK had a majority in percentage terms. So any disagreeable act was not in most of our names i.e. we didn't vote for it. Wriggle room. As for NI, maybe I'm naive but I'd never have played a part in ANY of the killings. I'm quite right wing but I can't see how anyone can justify gunning down protestors or laying bombs in civilian areas. I can see where the IRA were coming from in terms of taking out military targets however, this military was pretty much unable to respond. Sitting ducks.

That was the story that came out from David Goodhall a couple of years back during the negotiations for the Anglo Irish agreement. She wanted to wipe out the population. I believe that Churchill once made a similar point, that during the War Britain was extremely restrained in not invading Ireland for the territorial advantage it would have gained.
