Yes the portly one is John ‘Whippy’ Parsons. Went out with my sister for a while. I also knew him as a kid as my best mate growing up in Cathays was Jan Bekker (who also played League football) and Jan was in the same schoolboy team as John, Heol Hir. I can remember us all going to watch John play for Wales schoolboys (U15) versus England at, amazingly, Blackweir!! I wish I’d kept the programme to see who else was playing. This would have been 1964 or 65. Probably about 1,000 watching around a roped off pitch. Different days eh?
When Masky was a tad younger, he was quite a good footballer, who played alongside Frankie Price and Peter .Higgins, both of whom went on to become professional footballers. Masky discovered girls, or let me say they discovered me, and I had something large that they liked! Anyway, we played in a side called Clifton Athletic which was a nursery side for Bristol Rovers. There was no money in football then, or Masky might have been famous!
The reason I played for Bristol Rovers nursery side is that Cardiff City were so damn good and couldn’t get a sniff! No one better than John Parsons, who was the most prolific striker in the area....amazing guy! Sorry state now whilst Masky looks the business....just saying ! Fug off!
Come on Masky....don't be modest.......you have a sort of (in)fame(y) .......even if only on this page.
By way of contrast Pete, in 62/63/64, can't remember which, we had a school trip to Wembley to watch England v Wales schoolboys (don't know which age group). England won but my memory is of Wembley being pretty full. The school also took us to see Wales v Scotland at Ninian. The year before Wembley I think. We were sat in the Canton. Can't recall the score. Must have been my first visit to Ninian.
Ancient gits ......we need some youngsters on here - I usually can't remember what I had for lunch..........
And you can’t remember half of what Masky has posted under his name or others, or Masky would’ve beened banned! I should walk anyway, don’t want to be associated with any forum that would have me as a member! Dylan said that....hmmmm! Incidentally anyone seen my member....Clingon? No offence pal!
Pete - I can remember Jan Bekker playing for Bridgend Town in the Welsh League as it was known back then. I think he played up front around the same time as Aldwyn Morse and Alan Killey who were both my heroes as a sprog living right next to the Coychurch Road ground. From distant memory (not that old!) I think Bridgend Town FC evolved from Bridgend Vics FC who derived their name from the Vic pub in Adare Street where they had their meetings in an upstairs room. As a very early sprog, I also remember my elder brother, 13 years older and sadly no longer with us used to play for them at that time as a "wing half". I must be old to remember that position on the pitch.
Jan actually got me a game for Bridgend Town (or they may have been Everwarm by then) in a pre season friendly against Barry Town at Coychurch Rd, must have been 45 years ago! Didn’t get a second game though! We were lifelong mates and I went to his funeral a few years back at Coychurch Crem. I think the manager was Lyn Davies?
Ahhh......Everwarm - I remember that time well. Didn't the proprietors of the company eventually go to clink over some sort of local authority bribery scandal?
