I don't give a flying **** what the Koran, the Bible, Buddah or Lord Frith, the rabbit from Watership Down has to say on the subject. That's for people who believe that stuff, and it's fine, like homosexuality, if they wish to keep their practices and beliefs between like-minded adults. It's the imposing of those beliefs on others and onto children that horrifies me. Dawkins is right - faith schools should be abolished.

Good old Donald: the news that there WAS an armed off-duty officer at the club who tried to stop the slaughter has prompted Trump to say, more-or-less, that everyone should be armed with assault rifles, just in case, like. Including presumably, after Sandy Hook, schoolchildren too. Oh how I wish Sis was still with us to tell us that it's all a government plot.

Btw, has anyone seen the film of Owen Jones walking off Sky News last night? I despise that right wing lickspittle Julia Hartley Brewer he was on with. Trying to tell a gay man that the attack was not deliberately aimed at the gay community. Even the killer's dad said he was a homophobe and was infuriated at the sight of men kissing.

Lets not get misdirected. He was just another nut with a gun. That country is littered with them.

Deal with the actual issue. Stop the crazy gun laws. Problem solved.

As I said I really don't remember general access to assault weapons 20 years ago.

I do know guys who's grandfather's brought stuff home from wwii. M1 garand and such but..... I really think they must have done something with some laws to make this possible... and surely it can be changed back.

Sorry trebs I ain't having that, he was jihadist with an assault rifle and a handgun, he targeted a group of people that his religious sect reckon shouldn't be allowed to live.
He even phoned 911 and pledged the massacre to ISIS and now he is one of their so called martyrs.

It's easy(for you to )pidgeon hole what the ****er did because of the moronic 2nd amendment(?) and the idiotic NRA logic that its not the right to bear arms or the easy way they can be obtained that causes the many massacres, its the person that has their finger on the trigger.

America's gun laws will never be changed because there are far to many powerful people in the NRA that grease politicians palms in the senate to protect what their organisation exists for.

I think you're the one pigeonholing him Page. Don't believe the rhetoric. There's been very little facts and a lot of supposition. The little facts that have come out show

    1) he had zero links to any terrorist groups including ISIS

    2) He was a diagnosed nutcase. He had mental health problems.

    3) He hated gays, blacks, women, everyone. The guy who worked with him for a year said he blamed everyone for his problems. He hated life.

Now I dont say any of this lightly. The same **** has happened with countless nutters in the U.S - ppl of some religion and ppl of no religion. All had ONE thing in common. A hatred of the world, a chip on their shoulder, and a gun.

Get rid of the gun <ok>

I agree with Trebs up to a point. Whatever the particulars of this case, there are thousands of people killed every year in the US by firearms. There will be all sorts of insane reasons why people do it, but the common denominator is always the weapons, and the ease with which they're obtained.
We're a long way off from finding cures for mental illness, or eradicating mindless prejudices from our society - removing the means for these people to carry out their lunacy is surely the only viable step? Blaming each incident on religion or homophobia or whatever might explain the reasons, but it's the availability of such horrific weapons which is to blame for the scale of the death toll and this is the responsibility of US society as a whole.
I agree that the gun lobby won't give in, and that's the real issue. Somehow, something has to be done. Assault rifles have no place in the hands of ordinary citizens, they are simply weapons of war.

According to the FBI he travelled to Saudi twice with the only two American born suicide bombers.

His ex wife says he hated gays due to his faith in Islam.

He pledged his murderous deeds to ISIS.

And your post begs the question, do you think the 9-11, London bombers, Boston bombers, the Bataclan murderers, the Charlie Ebdo murderers etc all did what they did because of a collective chip on their shoulders?

Jihadi's/radicalized Muslims don't all work in groups and don't all come from the middle east, but their aims and intentions are all related through their so called religious beliefs.

But yeah just like any US citizen crazy, sane or a Islamic state sympathiser he was able to purchase the tools needed in a gun store.

His wife said he was a nutcase. He used to come home and beat the crap out of her bcos she hadnt done the laundry.

Like I said the guy was diagnosed mentally ill. He'd pledge allegiance to whatever faith he belonged to, like many nuts who happen to be Christian.

Here's one for you Page. On the same night...James Howell, 20, who was arrested in Santa Monica with assault weapons and explosives, told police he wanted to "harm" the Los Angeles gay pride event. Go figure!

FBI said he's not linked to terror. Imagine if the guy was a muslim.

I'm agreeing with you about the stupid right to bare arms law but is James Howell a radicalized Muslim or jihadist?

Not sure how you've reached that conclusion when he was a regular visitor to the gay nightclub in question. Hating women maybe (not factual) but gays? People he liked to hang about with?

Well it's quite normal for a lot of muslims to beat up their wives and hate homosexuals. Same can be said to about Christians and all walks of life. Can agree with both PMK and Treble, neither of you are really wrong.

The whole outlook on guns in America is beyond. It's so far out of reach and nothing effective will be done about it. And then you have Trump saying that more people need guns and muslims need to be banned from entering...when the problem is guns and people who are born there. I despair. I can't find the energy to argue about it.
