Well it was a 1-2 with the referee......admittedly not deliberate on the part of the ref, but a pin-point pass for our Tom to hammer it home.

A comfortable win for the Golden Boys seems normal enough, an incompetent performance from a referee seems normal enough. To me the oddest thing is that we were playing Barrow.

Really enjoyed that team talk video. Even putting aside the relative success he led us to, it's easy to see from that why Furphy was well thought of.

I've seen many an incompetent performance from referees - as you say normal enough - but that's the only time I've ever seen a referee lay a perfect pass with the side of his foot back to a player running into the penalty area for a goal. Decidedly not normal.

Barrow, for a few seasons at least (like Workington) were a force to be reckoned with in the 3rd Division. Playing Leeds Utd in the league would have been considered far odder.......

How times change!

Nick, I think it was in the evening because the Grand National was on that afternoon.
I watched the game from the touch line and could hardly see anything. Took a while to realise that Eddy had missed the penalty.

As I said earlier on in the thread, it certainly was because of the Grand National. In those days even the Boat Race could cause kick-off times to be switched around!

However I do remember being at Vicarage Road (against Workington) when the 1967 National was run, listening to the start of the race on a friend's radio (he had backed a couple of horses who were amongst the front runners). Just before the famous fence at which just about every horse fell, Watford scored. When the goal celebrations had died down Foinavon was several lengths in the lead much to everyone's amazement. My mate's horses were not mentioned again.........

Up to Graham Taylor, Ken Furphy was more than well thought of, he was our most successful manager! Shame Bonser didn't (or couldn't back) him when we were promoted into the second division in 1969. He left in 1971 for greener pastures (Blackburn Rovers!).
 
Hornette, do you think there's a chance that we'll see NN back? You seem pretty clued up about this particular transfer window.
 
NNW, i do believe there is every chance we will see him back. For one thing, he played in the FA Cup 3rd round. Another clue is that he didn't throw his shirt into the crowd after the match. The rumour is very strong, from good sources, that he will be back...however, with so many injuries in Sunderland at the mo, there's a risk that he won't be coming, but hopefully they won't need him. Though i don't think we can afford to buy him, so i'm guessing it's a season long loan that's on the cards...

and then again..i could be completely wrong...i hope not though!

Foinavon - a name I will never forget. I drew the horse in a work sweepstake which netted me a handy £10. Even better, I had placed a £1 bet to win - and I netted £100, an absolute fortune in those days (the equivalent of 3 months pay). Then, even better, Watford beat Workington 2-1 ;)

I suppose them getting priority is as fair a way of compensating them as we have available to us. It's a bit of a risk starting ticket sales tomorrow though, given the distinct possibility of playing on a Friday or Monday night.

how can they sell tickets without knowing what day the match is on?? That's a bit bonkers! I can only go if it's saturday or monday...what if i buy a ticket and can't go? That doesn't seem sensible to me! And...did i read that right? I take my 12 year old and pay £10 whereas my friend in the Vic road end takes his 13 year old and pays £5? Hmmpfh!

Well they are being 'displaced' and you're not!

Having said that, I know ST holders get first bite of the cherry - but do they the choice of buying their normal seats or do they just get pot luck?

Hmm, that makes a difference..maybe sort of ish! Not much though! lol

Usually I think if you want your seats you can get them straight away, if not, you have to wait til everyone can buy tickets...

It's only fair H. There are 9 of us in our group 4 of them are kids and we all have to move most likely to more expensive seats which is damned inconvenient and a nightmare to get 9 together!
 
As soon as we drew Spurs at home the club was in a no-win situation ticket wise, but I think they've handled it exceptionally well and have been very fair. In Hornette's situation it's £30 vs £35. Bearing in mind the sacrifices that the Family End are being asked to make (different seat, very different atmosphere, more difficult to get in and out) and that most of the best seats in the Rookery and Lower Rous were bagged six or seven months ago, I think a fiver off kids' tickets is an appropriate compromise.

it was interesting that they asked on Twitter what followers thought was a fair charge...from most of the responses i saw, most people seemed to think £20, £15, £10...

Ok think of it this way. My dad pays £100ish for my season ticket and now I am being told I cannot sit there because some ponsy spurs fan want the seat! Why should dad then have to pay to buy another seat when I have a perfectly good one there? Also surely the season ticket holders should get some perks as we travel week in week out to watch them, where as some might only bother going because it's such a big match.
 
No, the spurs fan has to have the seat, and why? Because we're in the 4th round of the FA cup and we want to make as much money as we can out of the Spurs fans, and also stick to FA rules and give them 30% of the capacity. Your dad pays less than i do i think for seats, but i choose to get a seat in the Rookery end, not only coz i love it there, but also coz i know i'm not going to get moved around. Moreover, the club will give the Vic end priority when finding them relocated seats. I also travel week in week out and get charged an extra £5 for doing exactly the same as you. I don't mind paying £25 for an adult, but for a 12 year old to have to pay an extra £5 isn't fair, imho. I know it's only £5, but it's the principle...doesn't make sense to me...don't punish the children just because their parents want to sit away from the family end!
