If it's limited edition even if it isn't particularly popular now it could be worth a bit in the future (think the tiger print one). Take a gamble and buy him an adult sized one. Stick it in a cupboard somewhere safe and give him it in a few years if it's gone up, then you can claim it took you ages to find one of those highly sought after shirts his size and in good condition.
