I'm surprised there haven't been at least three knee-jerk "Martinez for Spurs" posts on here since...
I can't see Arsenal finishing anywhere but 3rd at the moment. After how Chelsea have been this season & how big headed the fans are I would love to see them out of CL & see what manager will want to join. If Arsenal finish outside of the top 4 then Wenger will leave which means Arsenal will re build and become stronger. Let them have 3rd I think Chelsea will finished 5th even if we keep playing as badly as we are. Newcastle will get 4th.
Rumours have started that Di Matteo will be offered the job full-time for next season (or 2/3 of it) - which presumably has nothing to do with him being in the team when John Terry and Frank Lampard were making their Chelsea debuts...
I'll be suprised but if it does happen then presumably John Terry will be staying on as assistant coach?
It shouldn't be that a rival's defeat cheers up Spurs supporters because their supporters will think that their team is on our minds all the time instead of being on our own team. It also tells them that we look up to them and feel inadequate if we cheer when they lose. Do Fulham supporters cheer and hoot when Chelsea lose? I'm certain that they don't.
They do though. Having lived in Fulham their supporters love it when Chelsea lose. So do Man U when Man City lose & visa versa. Ok that's changed a bit now because it's the difference to winning the PL but a few seasons back Man U fans were happy we beat City to 4th. You'll find fans that hate other teams and are happy to see them lose. Even Westham fans have a hang up with us and love giving it when we lose even though they are playing the in PL qualifying league. You do need to take into account that Arsenal can be caught by Spurs (can't see it though) so course we'll be happy to see them lose.
That's not the same, Fulham and Chelsea don't have much of a rivalry. When City fans were poor they'd have taken some satisfaction in Chelsea and Arsenal beating United to some titles and certainly would've been pleased when United lost to Wigan the other week. That brings me on to the fact that Arsenal losing does benefit us, because they've stayed 5 points ahead of us. I'm sure we'd all take 4th right now even if it meant Arsenal finishing above us but they are more catchable with every point they drop and increases the chance of us brushing off the poor form and returning to 3rd. I don't think anyone's celebrating half as much as if we'd won on Sunday, or even last Monday but it's a benefit to us all the same.
I know older Man Utd fans that still find great pleasure in a defeat for Leeds, so I'm not sure that I follow your logic, TMT. Surely we've got more reason to find enjoyment in that result, as it may actually be relevant to our season?
Could it be that we are fighting for the same position in the league? Could it be the long tradition of rivalry between these two clubs? I don't see how it is possible to be a Spurs supporter without Arsenal figuring somewhere in the scheme of things. It should be obvious to all Spurs fans that we do not look up to Arsenal, far from it, the very different traditions make that a certainty. Perhaps you are too young to remember the Arsenal pre Wenger, playing stylish football a la Spurs is new to them. As this is one of the greatest rivalry's in football it should be a surprise to no one that we get a buzz from their defeat at Wigan much as they did after our defeat to Norwich. Sorry Mighty Thor I can only think that you are too young to have taken this all in.
Let's be honest, we needed cheering up... Also, plenty of fans love watching their rivals lose. As I mentioned elsewhere, Pompey fans are crowing that Southampton's loss to Reading has cost them the Championship title (even though it hasn't by any stretch of the imagination, or a calculator), and the amount of baiting between Liverpool and Man Utd over the years also underlines this.
I think we should all be a little more autonomous and not look up to the goons so much, but anyway I meant no offence. Spurf,I've been Spurs since Steve Archibald and Garth Crooks but thanks for the compliment, that really did cheer me up. Yes I listened to the match yesterday willing Wigan to beat Arsenal but it didn't lift the gloom of losing to Chelsea so badly but if it cheered up a lot of the lads then ok,why not.
So I was right, you are just a kid! Listen lad, a word of advice from an old un, you NEVER, NEVER, look up to Arsenal, just let your natural Spurs good looks and inherent superiority shine through.
I'm not sure about Chelsea's fitness level for the Goons, after us, the Barca game tomorrow! , if they've got anything left to beat Arsenal at their place....hats off, but I can't see it, depends if Arteta returns. Regardless of the result here, nobody wants to go to Stoke next needing a result , so we'll see after that. PS. None of the above matters if we don't win our game, till then I'm not going to bother posting anymore about the others.
