I remember the shock i had that we signed them,it came right out of the blue, the way all transfer's should be

Like klinsmann. I'd been on holiday and the first thing I heard on the radio in the car after leaving the airport was that we were close to signing Letchkov plus another I can't remember. I was fairly happy with that, we were pretty **** and Letchkov had just had a good World Cup. A day or 2 later Klinsmann was announced out of nowhere. Brilliant.
Modric was also done on the sly and early. I don't remember even reading transfer rumours about it. It may well have still been may too

Edit - just checked, late April for modders

To think Burkinshaw went to sign Villa and got Adilles as the makeweight.
What wouldn't I give for another event like that.

Surely it was the other way round? Ardiles was the star of the world cup (behind Kempes etc) whereas Villa was unknown (only got in the squad I believe).

I got a genuine press photo of villa scoring THAT goal and one of him celebrating his semi final replay goal at the arse v wolves ... My first match...i met him 2 yrs ago and he signed them both ... was like a kid when i met him

Was Villa actually any good apart from that goal? Its all I ever hear about him

I personally didn't think so. I was at the original final v City and he was useless, got taken off halfway through the second half having made no contribution. I was livid when he was picked for the replay, which explains why I am not a top manager and Burkinshaw was.
