    interesting article on NUFC.com

    NUFC: proceeding
    steadily in a 30 zone

Boxing Day saw Alan Pardew's side reach his declared objective of 30 points before year's end, prompting us to try and get an idea of how impressive that tally is.

It's a decade since we were last in better point-winning form at this stage of the season, while it's also worthy of mention that we're now within four points of the measly total for the whole season that saw us relegated in 2009.

(season / number of games and date to reach 30 points / total points tally at season's end)

    2011/12 18 games, 26th Dec, ?? points.
    2010/11 23 games, 22nd Jan. 46 points.
    2008/09 32 games, 19th Apr. 34 points.
    2007/08 31 games, 22nd Mar. 43 points.
    2006/07 24 games, 20th Jan. 43 points.
    2005/06 25 games, 11th Feb. 58 points.
    2004/05 25 games, 2nd Feb. 44 points.
    2003/04 21 games, 11th Jan. 56 points.
    2002/03 18 games, 21st Dec, 69 points.
    2001/02 16 games, 15th Dec, 71 points.
    2000/01 20 games, 26th Dec. 51 points.
    1999/00 25 games, 12th Feb. 52 points.
    1998/99 24 games, 6th Feb.46 points.
    1997/98 24 games, 1st Feb. 44 points.
    1996/97 16 games, 9th Dec. 68 points.
    1995/96 12 games, 4th Nov. 78 points.
    1994/95 13 games, 5th Nov. 72 points *
    1993/94 18 games, 4th Dec. 77 points *

*42 game season - all rest are 38.

the last time we did it in 18 games we finished on 69 points which taking last season as an example would have seen us finish 4th,5th in 2009/10,5th in 2008/09

I think I'll be disappointed if we don't finish with at least 56-58 points...I'm torn deciding if we should be able to eclipse what we've accumulated in the first half seeing as we maybe overachieved in the first quarter, and underachieved in the second quarter. Over 60 would be great! And I think achievable if we were to fill a few gaps in the squad this coming month.

What sort of final tally is usually required for 7th?

when you look at the table in 2009/10 the team finishing in 18th had 30 points 34 for the year we went down and 39 last year so it seems the points needed to survive is creeping up as well

anyone else find it interesting that after liverpool we will have played everybody once this year and we will have beaten none of the sides above us but will have only lost twice to teams below us (west brom and norwich - and it could be argued these were down to injuries) ?

going off the seasons i've mentioned 2008/9 53 pts,2009/10 63 pts,2010/11 54 pts so 54 would be a good points target whether that would be enough i'd say yes

25 points is reasonable given we have 20 games left. Really depends a lot of Everton/Stoke's seasons IMO, dont think Villa have a chance at any higher than 10th

was thinking the same 2 teams as well everton always have the usual late season rally but they've lost some good players and as for stoke they're pretty much hit and miss and still in Europe the biggest threat is of course us but i think we've had our blip for the season and can't see us going 6 games without a win again this season (just cursed us now :()

If the table is similar to now then it will probably be decisive.

As someone said, I really don't foresee Villa being the threat. They're playing a miserable brand of football, and have looked incredibly poor against the better sides in the league. If Moyes makes some canny moves as per usual, I think they could improve, and I think Landon Donovan may help their striker issues when on loan. As for Stoke, what an inconsistent side they've been, but a team that plays in a fashion that's so tough to beat, I think they'll hang around the rest of the way too. I firmly believe we'll be between 6th and 8th depending on whether Liverpool improves or continues failing to find an identity.

Everton always finish the season well, and Donovan will be a great signing. Good thing we play them near the end of the season in a way...
I see it as us against Everton, Stoke, and if they have a good time in January, Fulham for 7th.
