I was 9 years old and starting to really get into supporting Sunderland and knowing all of the squad players. On this day 25 years ago we were utter **** and we were beaten 1-0 away at Grimbsy Town. We also went through three managers, that season. How do you think our team that day stacks up against the team we last put out? -------------------- Norman ----------------- Kay -------- Butcher --- Ord -------- Gray Cunnington - Ball - Armstrong - Owers ---------- Goodman - Davenport --------- --------------------- Camp -------------------- Love -------- Kone ---- O'Shea --- Matthews ------------------ Cattermole ------------------ Gooch -- Honeyman - Ejaria - McGeady -------------------- Fletcher ----------------------- Not exactly sure of our line-up against Grimbsy Town as I can't find it anywhere but that was usually the sort of team we put out that season.
You lucky lad, only been at it for 25 years.....I've been hooked for 60 and whatever team you look back on none of them have been any good really. A rollercoaster has less ups and downs as us Sunderland fans, appalling really.
I was going to games earlier but it was about that time when the bug really took hold and I understood it properly. I can also remember how awful we were back then. The standard was horrendous and we had a team full of plodders. I still think this team we are being relegated with is better than that of our late 80's, early 90's teams.
Here's the team This season can be played here for nostalgic purposes, though the squad is based on the year before. https://classicreload.com/championship-manager-93-94.html
Mad we played them on the same day at the same ground on consecutive seasons and lost to the same scoreline
Wow! I was only a couple of players out there. I was looking through the leagues from the early 90's and both Tranmere and Grimbsy were often pushing for promotion towards the premier league. Tranmere finished in the play-offs at least twice. Both conference teams now. Look at the attendances! It halved the second season we played them. I wonder what the reason was for that.
I've been playing Championship Manager from the season here, blast from the past some of the names. 25 years. ****ing hell.
Almost half of that slightly later team went on to play in the Premier League for us under Peter Reid in 96/97. They can't have been that bad and certainly had more guts and determination than our current lot. In fact, I've just read Lee Howey's book, and almost all of them are mentioned in there. Learnt quite a lot about some of my (former) favourite players from my early teens from that book. It's very funny too.
Pretty sure this game was rescheduled after the original game was abandoned after about 2 minutes cos it was proper pissing down (Sunday afternoon) ???? It should never have kicked off, but they let thousands of us in so they had the coin in the bank !!!!
I remember an away match against Grimsby in the 94/95 season when Ball scored from near half way line.
Note the infamous Sunderland born striker playing both games for Grimsby. Only 3 of your starting line up remained, Jesus. My local team here is Tranmere, went to see them the other night play Gateshead. Conference game but the best match I've been to see for years. 2-0 to the Heed before a 4-2 turn around for Tranmere.
Practically all of our current team have played premiership football and they're awful. I'd like to read Howey's book. What's it called mate?
I recognised a few of them Grimsby players when I seem their team. I was watching the Gateshead score, didn't the Tranmere player score all four goals?
Aye, That's true. It's called Massively Violent and Decidely Average. It's probably the best football autobiography I've read. Its funny and his opinions on some of the 'characters' in the game are quite interesting.
Yeah Cook. The second Gateshead goal looked good on the night but most of them were really scrappy/ deflections. The worst were the last two, one of them (can't recall which) the two or three Tranmere players slipped over or stumbled on the ball in the build up play - quality football.
