Taylor Gardner-Hickman joins Birmingham City paving the way for Bristol City's latest signing Taylor Gardner-Hickman only joined Bristol City 12 months ago but Liam Manning has elected to revamp his midfield https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/gardner-hickman-birmingham-bristol-city-9504055
The first 2 can go, although I do believe we would need another striker as cover/competition if they do both go. I wouldn’t want to lose Vyner unless there is a hefty fee involved.
Liam Manning believes he can get the best out of Marcus McGuane after reunion at Bristol City Marcus McGuane played his best football at Oxford United when the now-Robins coach was in charge https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/liam-manning-marcus-mcguane-bristol-9504054
Feel we’re in danger of bringing in too many new faces all at once. New blood is good for a squad, but too much can unsettle things.
How many years have we been saying that our club needs a massive overhaul if we ever want to succeed? Manning seems to be doing just that with the comings and goings he has initiated, presumably with help form others in the hierarchy, and so I am more than prepared to see what these changes have brought to Bristol City. I think we still need to root out some existing players that haven't performed at the level required to be a contender in the Championship table, although some of those may be kept on to fill in for injuries and suspensions. We have added scoring power up front which is something missing in the last few seasons and it will be interesting to see who comes to the top of the pile over the next few matches.

Exclusive: Bristol City growing in confidence over signing Luke McNally before transfer deadline Liam Manning has been keen to add another centre-back to his squad for some time please log in to view this image Bristol City are growing in confidence they will be able to complete a deal for Burnley defender Luke McNally before the transfer window closes tomorrow night, Bristol Live understands, with the centre-back likely to be the Robins' seventh and final addition of the summer. City first declared their intentions to sign McNally during talks around Tommy Conway, with a swap for the 24-year-old and Scott Twine mooted, but a deal was unable to be concluded as the striker made clear his intentions were to join Middlesbrough. After completing the signing of Scott Twine on August 16, and following a brief period of reassessment, City resumed discussions with the Clarets over McNally but their initial valuation of £3m proved a significant stumbling block. City had Leicester City talent Ben Nelson lined up as an insurance policy in case negotiations totally broke down, not dissimilar to the decision to bring George Earthy to Ashton Gate from West Ham in light of frustration over Twine talks, while, as reported first by Football Insider, enquiries were made around Harry Darling's availabilty but swiftly rejected by Swansea City. Darling earned his move to South Wales in 2022 after working under Manning at MK Dons but has started each of the Swans' three Championship fixtures this season so head coach Luke Williams is clearly against letting the 25-year-old leave, irrespective of what City were prepared to pay. With Burnley keen to move McNally on after two years of little involvement and no indication he was part of Scott Parker’s plans at Turf Moor for 2024/25, further emphasised by the recent signings of Joe Worrall and Bashir Humphreys, a breakthrough in talks looks to have been reached. Providing all goes according to plan before the 11pm deadline on Friday, McNally will follow Fally Mayulu, Yu Hirakawa, Sinclair Armstrong, Twine, Earthy and Marcus McGuane as players brought in over the last two months and the first in the defensive end of the pitch. With concern over Rob Dickie’s hamstring injury sustained last weekend against Coventry City, plus questions on the durability of Kal Naismith and Rob Atkinson after both their seasons last term were wrecked by injury, McNally provides depth but significant quality. Although his time at Burnley has been a disappointing one, following his move from Oxford United in 2022, playing just seven times for the Clarets, he’s made 60 appearances in the Championship while on loan at Coventry and Stoke City. His partnership with Callum Doyle for the Sky Blues over the second half of the 2022/23 season was vitally important to their charge into the play-offs, while although the Potters had a desperately disappointing campaign last term, their defensive record was one of the fundamental reasons they remained in the division. His hopeful arrival at Ashton Gate will now provide Manning with three specialised right-sided centre-backs for the season ahead alongside Dickie and Zak Vyner, to balance Naismith, Atkinson and Hayden Roberts on the left. McNally would also become the sixth Irishman in the City squad, while he has familiar faces in the dressing room with Mark Sykes and McGuane teammates of his at Oxford during the 2021/22 League One campaign. He played 90 minutes for Burnley on Wednesday night in their 2-0 Carabao Cup second round defeat to Premier League Wolves after two late appearances off the bench in two of the Clarets opening Championship fixtures so there should be no concerns over his match fitness.
Luke McNally set to be confirmed as a City player Some early good news but we understand Luke McNally underwent a medical at the High Performance Centre last night and is set to be confirmed as a City player at some stage today. It would seem the Robins have got this one over the line before the deadline as well so he could be involved with the squad tomorrow at Pride Park. please log in to view this image
The news elsewhere in the Championship Plymouth forward Morgan Whittaker is being linked with a deadline day switch to Burnley. Swansea look to be signing Brentford midfielder Myles Peart-Harris on loan. Middlesbrough are one of a few clubs in the Championship who want Ipswich defender George Edmundson. Leeds are set to announce midfielders Ao Tanaka and Isaac Schmidt, from Fortuna Dusseldorf and St Gallen, while Daniel Farke wants one more addition, which could be Gustavo Hamer. Sunderland appear to have money to spend following the sale of Jack Clarke to Ipswich with Lyon striker Gift Orban and Leicester's Tom Cannon among their targets.
The possible storylines to look out for It's deadline day, given City's business so far it could be desperately quiet, then again as stuff happens elsewhere in the market, opportunities could present themselves that simply weren't forecast. But here are some pretty straightforward storylines to look out for today from a City perspective... Luke McNally: The belief is the Robins are close to adding the Burnley defender but do have an alternative option in Leicester's Ben Nelson on loan. The timing is important on this one, as if it's done before 12pm, McNally could be in contention for tomorrow's game at Derby. Will anyone leave? City's squad looks stronger than last season, even in light of injuries to Rob Dickie, George Earthy, Ross McCrorie and Yu Hirakawa. Manning has to find that sweet spot between opportunity and internal competition again having too many players. City are likely to push to make at least one departure, but to move a player on, you need a club to take them. Who departs on loan? The understand is that, in effect, any of the club's U21 players are available, if a suitable destination can be found. The ones most likely to leave on a temporary basis, at this stage anyway, are Omar Taylor-Clarke and Elijah Morrison. There is also the potential for thee above bulletpoint to be relevant to this section.
James Piercy Just to clarify on McNally We understand it's a permanent deal from Burnley, not a loan, as reported elsewhere.
Confirmed: Luke McNally is a Robin https://www.bcfc.co.uk/city-men-news/city-sign-mcnally-from-burnley/ City sign McNally 30 August 2024 Bristol City have completed the signing of Luke McNally from Burnley for an undisclosed fee. The centre-half joins after two years in Lancashire and has signed a four-year deal at Ashton Gate. McNally said of the move: “I am really excited and very grateful to be at a club like Bristol City. I am excited to get going and getting to see the training ground and meeting all the people has been great. “I wanted to join for the project really, and the manager has been successful, and I can see he is really building something here. “There seems to be a good buzz around the club at the minute and hopefully I can help with that.” McNally spent time on loan at Coventry City and Stoke City over the past two seasons, and reached the play-off final in 2023 with the Sky Blues, who lost out narrowly on promotion to Luton Town on penalties. Head Coach Liam Manning said: “Luke has a great pedigree and a lot of experience at Championship level. “He has all the attributes you would want in a defender, and we are pleased he is joining us. He gives us another great option and is the type of player and person we want in the building.” McNally will wear the number 15 shirt.
