As you have taken a bit of an unhealthly interest in another of my posts, not to mention odd, I feels as though you are doubting me and trying to make look like a bit of an idiot? So just so you can sleep a bit easier at night, I will elaborate a bit..... The said sheepskin was a three quarter length one and the rip was a big one, right down the back and jagged, of which required a specialst repair and patch. It wasn't 20 years after the event either, it was in 1975, as you eventually worked out and the specialists in those days, locally, were Waddingtons off Cottingham Road. If you google 'Waddingtons', which I'm sure you will, you may even find out the actual name of the person who repaired my coat, and with a bit of luck check my story with them, and possibly get to see the receipt?
It was debatable at time if the coat was worth repairing at the cost quoted, I decided it was, and therefore had it done.
As I quoted originally, back in the day when some of us were younger, we took a pride in our clothes and only bought quality British made clobber, unlike all the cheap foreign imitations that jumped on the bandwagon after my generation had made the garments fashionable.
So apology accepted as you were not to know, just take my word for it. Some of us had class back in the 70's, we were the originals.

If it's still available, you may need to bid a little more than the asking price in the auction I've heard.:emoticon-0105-wink:

    $117 Million

After the company's 50th anniversary, the one-model-only Lamborghini Egoista was launched. The supercar is currently valued at a remarkable $117 Million and is kept in the Lamborghini museum in Sant'Agata Bolognese. This makes it the most expensive Lamborghini ever produced.May 16, 2023

Thanks for the update, I won't be googling anything, I was just wondering why you'd spend £75 to repair a jacket, when that at the time you could have got a new one for pretty much the same money. Just struck me as an odd thing to do.

Incidentally, a £75 jacket in 1975, is the equivalent of £550 today and you could probably still pick up a UK made one for that (might have to wait the sales).

I think you're also looking back through rose tinted spectacles, I regularly buy vintage garments from the 60's and 70's and though the styles were great, we'd never get away with a make quality like that nowadays.

Seriously I thought the clothes my age group were buying then (late 60's to mid 70's) were better quality then some of the 5hite today.Especially Ben Sherman's. I was in their store in McArthur Glenn last week and the stuff in there is terrible and looks it. they are nothing like the originals. I remember my first pair of trainers, sure they were Addidas, which I bought from Asbestos in 1970 and they were made of leather, because they were proper running shoes. Top quaity stuff. I did notice when the skinhead/mods/suedehead movement became fashionable, the 'original' gear became more plentiful because most of it was copied. Remember Clifford Dunns getting a consignment of 'Ben Sherman' button down collar shirts in for a ridiculous price of about a fiver each and they were nothing of the sort, the only thing Ben Sherman about them was the label. Crombie coats suddenly became available for a song but the quality was awful. The top pocket hankerchief was actually stiched onto the coat! Mine cost me a fortune, it's cashmere, and I've still got it from the early 70's and it's still like new if you ignore where a moth has had a bit of it. Original Harrington jackets in the late 60's ( the summer of '69) were wonderful garments, then came the immitations. Same with Levi, Wrangler, Lee Cooper and the original Skinners ( Northern Soul) jeans, the more popular they became the more the quality went down.
We could get suits and shirts hand made from several tailors in and around Hull in those days and with employment plentiful for kids we could also get credit which up to then was unheard of. We had some decent clothes shops too catering for our age groups. Where did it all go wrong?
Today if I want a decent pair of shoes or a shirt there is nowhere in the city centre to shop. I don't do Primark.

I bought a pair of Dr Martens a couple of years ago. They were the the standard 1460 Crazy Horse ones. They were made in Vietnam I think. The soles lasted about 6 months and I didn’t even wear them every day. I returned them and got my money back. A few months later I noticed Dr Martens had a special ‘Made in England’ range which are crafted in their only remaining factory in Northampton. They were a bit more expensive but they are much better quality.

I don’t know how much it is to do with them being foreign-made but in the case of Dr Martens, if you have one range that are mass-produced on a large scale compared to a range that are more limited in a single factory, the latter are going to use better materials, have more attention and care for each pair of boots and generally be of better quality and more expensive. That goes for most things I think.

Now there we can agree, I don't really know what Ben Sherman are playing about at, but their gear is poor nowadays.

There's also far less options for tailor made stuff now, though Hull does still have quite a cool tailor round the back of the old police station, called Cock Of The Walk...

The Made In England Dr Martens aren't great either, the leather is half the thickness is was even just fifteen years. If you want original quality Docs, then buy Solovair instead, they're the factory that originally made Dr Martens and they still make them exactly the same (bit more expensive, but definitely worth it) - https://uk.nps-solovair.com/?countrycode=GB

The lass my big oppo married’s dad had something to do with Ben Sherman when it set up. Don’t know if it was manufacture of them, he was in Nottingham, but he used to get some good ones before they were available generally which used to be noticed by some at City who asked him where he got them from.True what you say about Crombies. The Levi’s my grandson gets are not a patch on the originals from around 1960- 1968. Same with Wranglers.
The original G4 and G9s were made in this country and lasted far longer than later ones. Some of the Carnaby Street stuff wasn’t made to last. Fashions changed almost weekly and were out of fashion by the time they made it to Leeds and Hull. Though the Sheffield mods always seemed a step in front. A lad I used to know whose family moved to Luton used to come back and they were two or three steps in front.
Best jeans I ever got were some Lee Riders when I was working in our Birmingham office. 63 shillings when Levi’s were 52 shillings. It was a hell of a chunk of an 18 year bold’s wage back then. But wore them from 1968 to 1975 when an expanding wage size stopped it. All the dye had gone but still not worn out.
Some people seem surprised that cheap, disposable stuff made in sweatshops in Turkey, Pakistan etc are not as well made and long lasting as stuff made here for some reason.
