Updated with current points and remaining 5 games (6 for some). This is how it looks with top 10 teams in italics: West Brom (69): Rotherham(h) Sunderland(h) Leicester(a) Sheffield Weds(a) Preston (h) Norwich(67): Sheffield Weds(a), Preston(a), Bristol City(h), Swansea(h), Birmingham(a) Coventry(63): Southampton(a), Birmingham(a), Man Utd(cup), Hull(h), Blackburn(a), Ipswich(h), QPR(h) Hull(61): Cardiff(a) Boro(h) QPR(h) Watford(a) Coventry(a), Ipswich(h), Plymouth(a) Preston(60): Huddersfield(h), Norwich(h), Southampton(a), QPR(a) Leicester(h), West Brom(a) We have 1 top ten game left, Coventry has 3 plus a cup game, Hull has 3 and Preston has 4.
We mustnt get complacent but credit to the team and Wagner too (I eat my words about him pre-Christmas!) for getting us through the hardest patch of this second half with such a good record (the Leicester result can effectively be ignored and I felt if just a couple of things had been tweaked we could have got more out of that game) - we really do have the easier set of fixtures to finish and the really good news bits in there are where the teams below us play each other
To make our situation just that bit better, Rowe might be available for the Preston game: "Jon Rowe is back for Norwich City’s Championship promotion run-in. The England Under-21 international returned to team training on Monday after a hamstring injury which had sidelined the highly-rated wide player since February. Rowe will not be risked on Tuesday at Sheffield Wednesday, who he scored one of his 12 Championship goals in 28 appearances against earlier this season, but could be in the mix for the weekend play-off shoot-out at Preston." https://app.pinkun.com/24238783/content.html
If anyone watched the watch along that he did with Hernandez for the Rotherham game, they should know Rose is desperate to be the top goalscorer, hopefully that can spark some friendly competition between him and Sargent
Updated with current points and remaining 4 games (5 for some). This is how it looks with top 10 teams in italics: West Brom(72): Sunderland(h) Leicester(a) Sheffield Weds(a) Preston (h) Norwich(68): Preston(a) Bristol City(h) Swansea(h) Birmingham(a) Coventry(63): Birmingham(a) Man Utd(cup) Hull(h) Blackburn(a) Ipswich(h) QPR(h) Preston(63): Norwich(h) QPR(a) Southampton(a) Leicester(h) West Brom(a) Hull(62): QPR(h) Watford(a) Coventry(a) Ipswich(h) Plymouth(a) Boro(62): Ipswich(a) Leeds(h) Cardiff(a) Watford(h) We have 1 top ten game left, Coventry has 2 plus a cup game, Hull has 2, Preston has 4 and Boro has 2.
The Preston game seems to hold the key for us. Win it and we're in the diving seat, a draw would preserve our position, but a loss could leave us vulnerable. No pressure then lads!
I think you need to remove Boro from the Hull list And wonder whether it shouldn’t include Boro as they are above Hull?
Another way of looking at it, in terms of the minimum expectation of results likely to be needed to have a chance of a playoff position: - Boro need four wins from four matches - Hull need four wins from five matches - Preston need four wins or three wins and two draws from five matches - Coventry need four wins or three wins and two draws from five matches - Norwich need two wins and a draw from four matches - West Brom need a single win or three draws from four matches
We just dropped two points to a team in the relegation places. Leicester were beaten by a team in the bottom six. Ipswich dropped two points against a team in the bottom 10. Given which, what exactly is the rationale for counting "top ten" opponents?
Look at the season, not a particular day. I thought you were a stats person, Robbie. btw Sheff Wed were not tough to beat; we capitulated.
How well you're doing (Stats) is never down to individual results, it's about trends, hence why the form table is so relevant. When the season ends and we find ourselves in a play off place, individual results will be totally irrelevant.
Yes, the form table is relevant -- see my post #3739 on the Today's Games thread. Canary Spring's "look at the season" ignores the fact that there's not just "the season"; there's also "home matches over the season", and "away matches over the season"; there's "teams improving as the season progresses", and "teams falling away as the season progresses", etc., etc. League position glosses over a plethora of granular detail at play in individual matches.
Plymouth just beat Leicester 1-0. I think with all teams scrapping we are going to see some very strange results the rest of the season. All those people predicting >100 points for the top two, now the maximum that can be gained by any team is 100 points.
Leicester had 70% of possession and dominated possession but Plymouth scored on a breakaway and then fought and scrapped to hold on to that lead as Leicester came a them time after time but just couldn't score. These games will be like that including our final game at Birmingham. Bristol City and Swansea have less to play for.
